NIB w/missing sear lever!

This is unbelievable, got my new 40 shield yesterday and went to clean the manufacturing gunk out of it. My son and I spent an hour trying to find the sear lever as shown in the manual to release the slide. NUTHIN THERE! Now, I am ex-Navy which pretty much means I can use a gun (big ones), if you give me coordinates on where you want the round to land, however, my son is a Marine and he was scratching his head as well.

We finally used the trigger method to get the slide off and clean it however, there is absolutely no lever there, let alone one in florescent yellow as S&W customer service states. An hour on the phone with customer service and I am now putting my brand new weapon that has never been fired, back in the box, and off to FedEX and S&W for repair. Pretty piss poor if you ask me.... Back to my Beretta, I only wanted something smaller and definitely made in the USA... ****!

Little blurry, but I do not see the sear release there either.

You can just pull the trigger to disassemble, then maybe it will be easier to see if it is or is not there.

I just bought some 8 round 9mm mags for my Shield and I couldn't get more than 6 rounds in it. The mag had 2 followers in it. S&W Q/C has gone waaay down hill. If you can't get a mag right, imagine the stuff that happens to a firearm!

Here are two more pics from top and bottom. No lever. Unreal. And of course with all the gun store policies of no returns, not to mention that they register it right there in the store, your basically screwed. And S&W had me searching in the box in case it fell out, seriously???

@BFM. Thats how I took it apart to clean the manufacturing gunk out of it. But there was no lever there to begin with. Certainly not something painted yellow or fluorescent yellow as customer service said it would be.

That's a sear deactivation lever, not a takedown lever. Takedown is on the frame. I was expecting to see a hole in the frame of the gun where the takedown lever should be.

Honestly, I'd be fine not having a sear deactivation lever. Field strip it like a glock and call it a day. As long as you've got your head on straight and can make sure your gun is clear before field stripping... you're good.

My apologies on the terminology.

I took it back to Sportsman's Warehouse to send back to S&W. I understand your point about tearing it down without the sear lever but it still annoys the sh*t out of me that something like that can happen in an American factory. Let them re-work it like it should be for my $400 and then send it back. Until then, my Beretta works just fine, if a little bulky! BTW, for other newbees like myself, here is what it is supposed to look like, and then what mine looks like. Thanks for all the help. T

I don't understand why S&W didn't just send you one instead of sending the whole gun back....seems sort of silly to me.

S&W has always treated me like royalty whenever I have needed their help and I am far from any royalty!! I am sure they will make it right for you.

Who knows if they will even send it back or fix it in the store. Supposedly it's going back. It's the principle of the thing that annoys me. Like the customer service woman that was chuckling when she asked if I looked in the box as it might have fallen out. Seriously?

If that picture of the one without the sear lever is your "new, never fired" pistol, I'd take it back and ask them why they sold me a used pistol as new. The extractor and breech face sure look well used to me.

Dealing with the sear deactivation lever is more in depth and hands on than s&w wants any of us to get with their products.

It actually can be a little bit of a pain removing or installing those things.

No problem. They will put in the sear deactivation lever when it is back at the factory. And as a special bonus for your trouble, they will add the magazine disconnect safety.

@bkreutz, not sure how you can tell from that right side pic that it's a used gun, but, it's pristine inside with the exception of the missing part(s) and enough manufacturing grease to keep a 59 Coupe de Ville satisfied.

Just looking at the circular wear on the breech face, none of mine had that when they were new. They do now, but they have over 50K rounds on them.

Just looked a little strange to me for an unused gun. But internet photos can be deceiving.

This is not the first time we've heard of this. Apparently, the pin that holds the sear disconnect lever in place has been forgotten on some guns. Really embarrassing for S&W if you ask me.
