Part way through the Model 66 (no dash) production run, S&W moved the gas ring from the cylinder to the yoke. They also went from an entirely stainless rear sight to the black you are used to part way through the 66 (no dash) run.
On the 66-1 the gas ring was moved back to the cylinder (where it belongs). 66-2 dropped pinned barrel and recessed cylinder bores.
