Hi. I'm new to gun ownership. Picked up a 15-22 today and was wondering what and how I need to clean the gun before firing it for the first time? Thanks.

congrats and welcome to the disorder... the search function on here is great but to answer your question..

pull the rear take down pin.. the gun will break open with alittle help

remove bolt and bolt carrier

with a q-tip remove all the residue with a solvent of your choice made for firearms from the lower fire control parts, bolt, bolt carrier and chamber(breech end of the barrel as deep as you can go with a q-tip is fine)

apply a small amount of lube to everything and reinstall...

check the barrel for any debris from shipping...

and before you go to the range brett has some videos in a sticky above watch them all he done a very good job on the basics of this weapon

Glug some CLP down the barrel and drag a bore snake thru it.

Remove the bolt group and clean and lubricate it with CLP .

Put a couple drops of CLP on the sear and disconnector in the trigger group.

Notice the common item in each step? ;)

I'm not trying to be flip, but the owner's manual is a great reference for a new owner. The 15-22 manual goes over all the safety and operational aspects of the rifle as well as care and maintenance instructions. As for cleaning, a simple 22 rifle cleaning kit from the likes of Wal-Mart should suffice.

Hey, Thanks guys. I appreciate it very much.

Oh, and I did read the manual, but sometimes I feel that advice from real folks is oftentimes more helpful and insightful.

get you a couple boxes of cci ammo to break it in with.. and then switch to fed bulk and you should be good

It never happened if you don't post a picture - show us your rifle! :D It would also be nice to know the SN series, color of the star on the back of the manual, color of the bolt springs and the markings on the magazine. The data helps us track some of the revisions of the 15-22. TIA.

I'll try to post some pics this weekend, but I can tell you that the SN series is DTX5, the star on the manual is red, bolt springs are gray, and the magazine is marked 22LR 25 ROUND. It also has the birdcage flash supressor.

Does that help you out?

Absolutely - thanks for the data!
