I've been perusing the boards here for a while looking for info on the M&P Pro series and I'm a little surprised that there hasn't been much written on them. I'm thinking of getting into some local IDPA shooting and I only have a couple of 1911's on hand (...along with a bunch of revolvers) and I'm thinking that perhaps one of them new-fangled M&P's should maybe be in my future. For those that either have them or have looked at them; specifically the M&P9 Pro:
- are they competitive?
- any regrets?
- 9mm vs 40 cal for IDPA? (I'm a cheap person; 9mm appeals to me for that reason)
- how does that fiber optic front sight work for IDPA?
- Also; those 1911 Pro 9mm's are listing for more than double the MSP of the M&P's; are those things worth the price of admission?
Thanks for all replies. -S2

I have 4.25 9pro. I like it alot, good trigger, easy shooting and accurate.

I don't shoot it in competition as I don't shoot competitively anymore.

You have looked around in the M&P sub forum right?

I use one and absolutely love it in ALL aspects. It is becoming VERY prominent in USPSA/IDPA . You will love it as well!!

I had a 9L (pro with long barrel), 9c and 45c.

Did not like the triggers... the 9L had a good trigger job... shot it in a few matches (USPSA) sold it. Same thing with the 9c (IDPA). The .45 trigger was horrible and did not like the safety either.

Now I am into 3rd gen S&W.

Peace

There is a lot of love for the M&P series pistol here!

I started shooting an M&P40 fullsize in IDPA and did pretty well with it. I like the 40s&w cartridge, it can be loaded pretty light with 165 grain bullets and still make minor power factor.

About a year ago my son bought an M&P 9mm Pro for me and I have been shooting it in IDPA ever since. I really love this gun and 9mm is cheaper to shoot. The longer sight radius has helped me on my accuracy (at my age, I need all the help I can get) and the front fiber optic sight is fantastic. I changed the light tube to a green one, which for me shows up better on the brown cardboard targets and I absolutely love it.

I am loading 147 grain bullets subsonic and still making minor power factor. Very soft shooting.

When I first showed up with my M&P 40 at an IDPA match, there were only one or two other fellows shooting M&Ps. Now we have at least a dozen or so each match.

9mm vs 40 cal for IDPA?
Unless you handload, .40 is the red-haired child in IDPA, because you can shoot either 9 or .40 in SSP and ESP, but either way, you only have to make 125 power factor. There is no division in IDPA specifically for full-power .40.

On the other hand, .40 Major power is probably the most popular cartridge in USPSA Limited and Limited 10.

I come from revolvers, so I shoot the 9 Pro box stock. People used to light SA triggers bitch and whine about most M&P triggers. APEX has trigger kits.

In USPSA Production and IDPA/SSP, the M&P 5" 9 Pro is one of the most popular guns, closing in on Glock 34s.
