Hi recently droped off to local gun smith a Mod.58 I traded a Mod.28 for, not looking as close as I should have,found that the cylinder was draging on two chambers and not locking up before the hammer finished it's stroke back. Took it in to a local gun smith (recomended) just picked it up and found that it doesn't drag as bad but now three chambers don't lock up as they should. When I was told it was done they said the gun had been tuned, barrel to cyl. gap set and test fired, It's ready to go. Well called the shop, g.s. won't be in till Tuesday willhave to leave note on issues. I was charged fifty bucks the first time, the way I see it unless sonething odd but possiable the crane is bent I don't feel I should have to pay any more. My question is, am I right in thinking this. Just want it right, if it's something more I will gladly pay.

the way i see it you shouldnt owe any more money. yeah, he fixed the dragging but it only went in with 2 chambers not locking and came out with 3.....he didnt do his job...

I have a 27 that would get tight on two chambers. FINALLY I figured out that the problem wasn't at the rear of the cylinder, but at the front. Some numnutz had filed away on the yoke button and it had too much endshake in the yoke (frankly, I wouldn't be surprised that it came from the factory that way.... I have another with similar issues...). AND, the front end of the cylinder boss was uneven, and worked as a cam against the little boss on the front of the yoke barrel....all of which worked together to screw things up. Peened the yoke button down where it should be, and filed everything up and got it all the way it ought to be. ;-)

My own personal opinion is find another gunsmith and chalk up that 50 dollars as a lesson learned.There is no way he could have checked his work and if he did apparently there's not much pride in workmanship there.Good luck to you.

I would not want to pay if the job wasn't done properly. I guess I'd wait to talk to the 'smith and see what he said. If he can't fix it or come up with something plausible, get him to meet in the middle as far as paying for his time. If you have no choice but to pay for a shoddy job, inform him you will let everyone know about his "quality" of work. If he is a good 'smith, any of this shouldn't be an issue. Sounds like you already have your answer about his work anyway. Good Luck

Revolver work is pretty specialized, and you need to know what you are doing. I'm learning as I go.

All sound advice, will return it tomorrow show the shop owner and leave a note for the smith. Having spent some time looking at tne action if I swing the cyl. out and spin the cyl. the eject rod looks a bit out of round as it spins could it be bent slightly causing the bind?

Ejector rods are rarely perfectly straight. That shouldn't cause any binding.


If the cylinder is not turning enough and snapping into place with the cylinder stop, then perhaps the hand is worn/too short (or ratchets messed up)??? I haven't had that problem before myself, so no experience with it.

Is it still binding up? If so, check your endshake carefully. You'd be surprised at what all problems that can cause! If it's too tight, It can seize up the gun. It can even seize up only on one or two chambers, but seem fine on the others. My other M27 with problems had this, and I had to carefully work down the yoke barrel with a piloted cutter until it would cycle through all the chambers with no problem. And I still have ZERO endshake!

Oh, by the way, if one wants to do this kind of stuff, but doesn't want to spend $60+ on the yoke cutter, I found by pure happenstance and luck that a .308 diameter bore pilot for a muzzle facing cutter (I will presume I got it for a 7.65mm Mauser years ago...) works perfectly on an N frame yoke! Of course, the muzzle facing cutter wasn't cheap either, but I had it already!

Hello Chatcat,

Sorry to hear about your gun problems, as to the cylinder dragging it may be as simple as a shim to take care of possible endshake. If I remember correctly Smiths don't lockup until just before the hammer reaches the end of the stroke, you may just need a new spring for the cylinder bolt?

At any rate the gunsmith should work with you to your satisfaction to solve your problems.

I'm not sure I would want him working on that gun any more, considering how sloppy he was on the first attempt. I agree, mark it up to experience and find another more qualified smith.

I had the same problem with a LNIB Model 65-1 so I sent it in to S&W they adjusted the cylinder gap, Squared off the cylinder face and replaced the hand all for less than a $100 bucks.

Are you checking the timing with empty cases in the chambers (at least three)?
