I'm going to order the Lyman 49th reloading handbook.

There's also a Lyman Pistol and Revolver handbook.

Is the pistol handbook just a copy / section out of their 49th edition? Is it worth buying both? I'm getting the 49th regardless. How good is the pistol book?

The Pistol & Revolver Handbook has more info specific to Handgun reloading but the bigger Reloading Handbook will get you through Handgun reloading as well. Personal choice. I have both and alternate upgrades. Lyman manuals are my mainstay and I've been relying on them since the 60s.

The '60's, WOW! ;)

I have both too. The only thing I like about the Handgun one is that it is in blue. My favorite color! :)

Since you didn't mention which Pistol and Revolver manual, I'm going to assume it's the third edition. It was first printed in 2004 so it's not a copy of #49. Although it will have some of the same data there will be differences if new powder or bullets were used that weren't available earlier, or, as in the case of the .41magnum, if they discontinue a bullet mould the newer manuals may not contain data for them. The articles in the P&R book will be more handgun specific, but in the case of the 3rd edition they aren't all that great, not to me anyway. So if it will be any better or not will depend on what you are shooting and wether one or the other has more specific data.

I use my P&R manuals a lot because I do a lot of loading for handguns and they're usually more convienent to use, again how well it suits you will depend more on you.

The #49 is the first available in hardcover, I believe, and I paid the little extra for it over the softcover version. My only complaint about Lymans manuals is they fall apart too easily, the hardcover looks promising.

I taught myself to reload using the Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook 2nd edition, it was the first manual I bought. I still think it is pretty good, I use it in conjunction with Lee and Speer.
