I picked up this 10-6 and a much uglier 10-8 from an online retailer who advised both were traded in by a retired NYPD officer. Both invoice to NYPD Eqpt Bureau. This one shipped 8-14-1973. No special markings and both function in DA.

For the NYPD people here am I correct these were for private purchase by individual officers like the NY-1 series versus NYPD purchased and issued? I have heard NYPD stopped surprising their issue guns years ago. When did the DAO requirement go into effect?

As a retired cop I really enjoy having the NYPD lineage on a pretty ordinary gun. Also happy it included a Tyler T grip from right here in OKC.

You are correct. We bought our duty guns from the Equipment Section and there was nothing special about an NYPD 10-6 vs. a regular 10-6. The DAO guns went into effect for the July, 1987 class. The stainless DAO guns made you stand out as a rookie, and guys from the January 1987 class with the blued guns loved calling guys hired in July 1987 rookies.

I have a blued Ruger Police Six that went to the NYPD in January 1987, so the last of the blued guns, and I also have a stainless Ruger Service Six that went to the NYPD in July, 1987. I have many others. There are so many different NYPD guns over the years that I'll never get them all.

But I collect NYPD guns since I was a member of that department and I like the lineage of it. The 10-6 I have was sent to the Equipment Section in 1986, so it was among the last of the blued guns with the hammer.

Thank you for your service and insight.

The 10-8 RB I got with this one was rough as hell. It shipped to the Eqpt Bureau 2-5-1987. I have swapped a 3" barrel on it and will rust blue it.

I have 5 more coming that were traded in by a NYPD detective. Hoping they check out as well. 10-6, 36, 669, DAO Sig P226 and a 4" blue Ruger Police Service Six.

We never used the 669 so that can’t be NYPD gun. The other likely are, especially the Ruger Service Six if it’s in .38.

I wasnt sure about the 669. I know the others were authorized. Are you aware of any way to verify a 226 as shipped to NYPD?

I have an NYPD 226 DAO. A call to SIG got me a ship date and that fit the timeline. Not many agencies used DAO 226’s, and the fact that the dealer I bought it from buys a lot of NYPD guns from retired guys and the others I bought from him all lettered to the NYPD, I took that one in faith.

There’s a DAO Ruger Service Six in the bug auction site right now with the auction ending at 9PM tonight. It’s a for sure NYPD gun since it has the inspector star in the frame area. Current bid is $445. I already have one or I’d be interested.

Yep, the 469/669 was popular (capacity and size) at least in the PBBX/PBMN.

Never saw anybody carrying an unauthorized gun other than undercover where allowed to. Nowadays they’d be fired and indicted for it. I did know one cop who carried a Glock 19 off duty even though he hadn’t qualified with it yet.

I have one of the prototype NYPD 226's in my collection.

When the Glocks became available for general purchase in the US but were still 'banned' in NYC, a lot of guys went off the reservation and acquired Glocks and had them as off-duty pieces. It actually got to be so bad that the annual shootings report, SOP9, used to have a special chapter just for unauthorized Glock shootings.

When the PC was interviewed on a morning news show (I --think-- it was "Out of Town" brown, but I could be mistaken) about his personal security when out and about, especially jogging, he said he had no worries because he carried his own personal little machine gun and then indicated a holstered Glock, which at that time was not permitted in NYC. The screaming and howling started shortly thereafter.

Best,
RM Vivas

Best story I heard about Lee Brown was when he took a leak out of a police helicopter after a cops funeral. He was a DEI hire before that term ever existed.

The 10-8 doesn’t look that bad. The round butt was uncommon. Clearly among the last of the blued Model 10’s since July 1987, all new hires got the stainless gun. Hold onto the barrel in case you wanna put it back on and return it to original.

The crazy part is the stainless guns were ever seen as having any value. Guys were selling them for $100 with full duty belt and speed loaders to help pay for the nightsights and belt and holster for the new 9MM. I knew one guy who had the 4” barrel on his 64 NY1 cut down to a 2”. It looked so stupid with the square butt. There’s a few on gunbroker selling for stupid money. One is $1600 and the other $5000. They’ll never get those prices. I got my 64 NY1 that shipped in July 1987 that I got for about $750 like 2 years ago on gun broker.

It is rough. The camera was kind to it. I am keeping the 4" barrel.

I watch all the auction sites and forums and tend to be a bargain hunter. I paid around a grand for both of my NY1s combined. I have seen several listed at over $2k. Never seen one sell for that.

Do we know if the 226s came from Sig or a LE distributor? Hoping Sig can confirm.
