Odd school nicknames

I haven't seen this addressed before. Here in Illinois we have the following:

Freeport Pretzels
Cobden Appleknockers
Teutopolis Wooden Shoes
Mount Carmel Caravan
and one that disappeared a number of years ago
Pekin Chinks

I once had a crew of three that worked for me. "Jig`s" Jannish; "Glutton" Graheck; and "Moose" Jarvey.
 
In Maryland, we had SMIB's.
Southern Maryland InBreds.
Conveniently, they always lived over the river just south of you. :D
 
If you want to see some wonderful team names, watch Ken Burns' excellent "Baseball" mini-series. Each episode opens with a list of great ones, some very funny.

Wethersfield. high flying geese

red bud musketeers
all Illinois teams
 
My nephew's old girlfriend went to Muskingum College - home of the Fighting Muskies. We have Arcadia University just down the street - used to be an all-girls college named, wait for it, wait for it, .......Beaver College!
 
Who can forget the Pahrump ( home to legal houses of ill repute ) Trojans.

The last time I was there it said so on their water tower.
 
Two current schools names whose meaning is sometimes not understood:

Southern Illinois "Salukis" - a sight hound known as a Persian Greyhound

Virginia Tech "Hokies" - a hokie is a wild turkey but the school claims that it was made up from a spirited chant
