Hi all.

Sorry my fist post is a tale of woe but I figured this was the place to ask.

I have what I think is a early model, serial id DTH****.

It's over a year old and today the extractor failed, I don't think I had an OOB, I just seemed to have a FTF and realized the extractor assembly was missing. I found the spring the retaining pin, (old style one, it doesn't have the tab).

Anyway how should I go about getting it fixed?
Can I contact S&W and get an updated assembly, or will I have to send the gun in does anyone know how much that will cost
me as its out of warranty?

EDIT:
Please jump to page 2 to see the happy conclusion!

Someone with exerience sending it in will be able to give you a more exact answer, but I see no reason why you can't call s&w, tell them the problem (why give age of firearm), and have a shipping lable in a day or two. I'm not sure about the out of warrenty thing, and I may be wrong, but I don't think there is an experation date for manufaturer defects. Despite what you did with it if you blow out the extractor it is not, in any way user eror. My 2c

1) Give S&W a call... explain the issue calmly. They may just tell you to ship it back and they'll fix it for you.. no harm in asking.

2) I've not seen parts listed anywhere, but you can also ask them to send/sell you the extractor parts.

3) if 1 & 2 don't fly, ask them if you can just ship them the bolt assembly for repair rather than the whole gun.

It would be great if they would sell parts for these guns.. I'd love to keep a spare extractor in my bag!

Best of luck to ya...

I have heard nothing but good things as far as S&W standing behind their products and their customers. I'm sure if you give them a call and are curteous, they will take care of ya.

Yup, just call and don't mention anything about the warranty. They are probably so used to getting these guns back for similar issues, the person on the phone will just go through the usual routine with you and send you a label.

Email them that the extractor blew out of the rifle. They'll email you a "call tag" for FedEx ground. Put a letter in the box explaining what's wrong -- extractor blew out. No need for more details than that.

Send your magazines as well (note in the letter how many magazines) as they've been replacing mags with the latest design too.

I sent mine in two pieces wrapped in bubble wrap in a small box. Came back in 10 days in a retail box inside a shipping carton.

It's life time

The 15-22 manual says one year warranty and then states what's below making it essentially a life time warranty. I guess you need to be the original buyer and have turned in the product registration card (I recall registering on line). I suspect that S&W will take care of the problem with your 15-22 even if you aren't the original owner or didn't turn in the warranty card. I recommend you call them up and just tell them about the problem. They'll probably tell you to send it in at their cost and they'll take care of it.

Smith & Wesson's Lifetime Service Policy begins after the warranty
period has expired. Smith & Wesson will repair, without
charge, for the lifetime of the original owner, any Smith & Wesson
handgun purchased on or after February 1, 1989, and any
M&P15 series rifle, that is found to have a defect in material or
workmanship. Eligibility for this Lifetime Service Policy requires
returning the Product Registration Card within 30 days of purchase.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. :)

I'll will give them a call and see how I do. I don't think I sent the Registration card in but hopefully they will consider it a manufacturing defect. I really want to get this gun fixed, it's sooo much fun!

I'll let you know how I get on.

I have never sent a warranty card in and have sent several guns back to SW. Call them, don't e mail. Like others have said just tell them what happened and they should mail you a Fed Ex label.

SW has the best customer service around.

Thanks again for the advice,

I Did call and talked to Paul just now, and he's sending me a Shipping label, registration card not a problem.

What an awesome manufacturer, actually standing behind their product.

I'm so happy I think S&W just got another convert!

:) :) :)

S&W CS

Good to hear that you are being taken care of. It never hurts to call and ask. I tried to register my 15-22 online but learned that the registration never got into their database. S&W CS told me not to worry and to call if I ever had a problem. Well, I had a magazine split on me and I had a new short 10 rounder (I'm in California) two days after the return label came in.

DTH blues......

Orangutan, Out of curiousity, did you ever have any FTF, FTE or stovepiping with your DTH**** before your extractor problem? I had a "DTH" that couldn't go through LG. mag without 4-5 jams. After sending it in I got it back w/in 10 days...excellent CS on S&W's part. I did ask for a "freebie" extra mag if they had one, but I didn't get it.(Oh well,it was worth asking) Besides operating at an excellent level now, I've had not 1 Jam in about200-300 rds.(I've been busy-knee surgery, etc.) There's new trigger springs(Blue-much smoother pull and somewhat lighter). I did notice the 1st time loading the mag that it had been changed out... the new mag loads slower, you have to really take your time loading, so alot of the trouble with the "DTH" series is related to the mag. MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE ALL MAGS. Have fun when it comes back!

Update: The 15-22 Arrived back today, (Tried yesterday but no one home) wife signed for it so I haven't seen it yet, agh 4 hours before I can go home!

Sorry weasel missed your question; Not really that many FTF/FTE, maybe my ejector was in the right place.

Oh, they received it on Friday 13th so that's a 10 day turnaround from them getting it to me getting it back. Very impressed. :)

Range Update:
I finally got to go out and fire it. There seems to be an improvement in the feel. Hard to put my finger on so it might be psychosomatic, But the action felt some how cleaner. They replaced the springs on the bolt and trigger as well as the extractor fix so maybe that explains the new feel.
Thank you S&W if you read these forums! ;)
Edit:
No FTFs or FTEs in about 150 rounds either.

FYI, I have the registration card right now... and it says "completing this card will help you obtain more efficient warranty service..." presumably because they'll have your information already.

And for anyone who wants to register on-line, the address is:
Smith & Wesson Product Registration

When I called the mothership to get a 'born-on' date for the two 15-22's I just bought, the nice lady told me that they did some modifications around Feb 2010. (Mine were born Nov & Dec 09). She also said not to worry that mine were manufactured before the mods because they have a lifetime warranty. She also said if I have a problem, give S&W a call and they'll take care of it.

I'll believe that until I hear or read otherwise.
