So we've had bear gun, truck gun, woods gun, zombie gun, bedside gun, Katrina gun, EOTW gun, SHTF gun, thread etc. How 'bout a penguin gun thread?

I'm looking a job opportunity in support of polar research facilities that may even include time on station in Antarctica. So is 20ga. enough for Penguin or should I opt for a 12ga.?

I'm gonna suggest a 12ga those suckers have a heavy plumage and blubber layer to get trough-would stick with at least #2.
In the spring time after they have not eaten for 6 months or so a 20 may do the trick, but in my experience I'd stick with a 12. (but that was before I got banned from the aquarium

They don't fly, so a shotgun probably wouldn't be necessary, it isn't like wing shooting.

I think a 6.5 x 284 would be just the ticket. You get long range and accuracy. Long range may be just what you are looking for, you can stay in your hooch and stay warm while practicing your long range shooting.

Actually... polar explorers in the past did indeed take guns along for harvesting penguins. I don't know if they are tasty or not, but it was considered an expedient meat source for emergencies. I think Shackleton's men ended up eating quite a few. I think that they had .303 rifles and revolvers along for the trip.

Firearms in Antarctica are actually a bit of a problem owing to treaties prohibiting the military exploitation of the continent. Most civvy research flights transit New Zealand, where customs is unlikely to clear firearms for polar shipment.

However, station commander/muckety muck/admin types at the Pole are issued a handgun to keep in their office. This isn't for use against penguins, but is kept in case anyone gets cabin fever and tries to kill everyone with axe.

That's also the reason that you can only buy one case of beer a week at McMurdo. (There's also portion control on lobster day. It's a rough life.)

Some stations used to have shotguns for shooting skeet recreationally, but that seems to have fallen by the wayside owing to concerns about lead contamination issues. Darn Greenpeace.

Gatorfarmer,

I continue to be amazed at the plethora of obscure topics that you are a wealth of information on. Never a dull moment. Thanks.

A few years ago a friend of mine was going to take his daughter to the San Francisco Zoo. He asked me if I wanted to go along. Yeah, sure. I hadn't been to the zoo in years. While we were looking at the penguins, a group of about kindergarten aged kids came along with a zoo tour guide. The guide starts telling the kids about the penguins and then asks the group "Does anyone know what penguins are afraid of?" One little boy blurts out "GUNS!"

I have a few old Penguns, is that close? You want red, green, or concussion? Oh, someplace I have 3 or so of the teargas cartridges, too.

At a gunshow about 10 years ago some guy had an original display card with 10 of them, including shells for sale. He also had a card with switchblades on it. Big bucks.

Howdy,
what is black white, black white, black white, black white?
A penguin catching a bullet in the stairwell.
This kind of stuff will get you kicked out of the zoo.
