This should be a warning to all of us.

Or, at least those of us that travel...

I just saw the story of where Shemane Nugent forgot that she had her perfectly legal concealed carry handgun in her carry on.

The moral of the story here is:

NEVER NEVER NEVER use the same piece of luggage, backpack, briefcase or any thing else that you would carry on a plane as anything that you might put your concealed carry or extra ammunition, magazines or speedloaders into, on or around!

Tips:

  • Never use the same bag for a range bag that you might ever use as luggage.
  • Never use a briefcase that you may carry on an airplane as a place to store your handgun, ammo or accesories- get a dedicated one for that
  • Never allow a family member to pack your suitcase or carry on. They might be well meaning and think you might have left that speedloader full of ammo on the bed mistakenly, and thus drop it into your carry on
Talk about a Bad Day at Black Rock for Mrs. Nugent.
Gonna need a good lawyer.

Be more vigilant- the cost of dedicated items to travel with are far more affordable than legal fees.

I hate to hear that. Man, I get that anxiety, "Did I take everything out?," before I go through security. Last time I stopped and checked - wasn't worried about a gun, but a mag or knife could have slipped thru the cracks. :(

Good moral to the story, amigo.

I can't imagine being so "casual" about any firearm I own that I would forget it was in my luggage when going to the airport ... people (myself included) do dumb things all the time, but in this instance there are some pretty severe consequences.

What he said.

All it takes is a few rounds of ammo, or a mag or speedloader to ruin your day though.

People do carry more than one or even two- those extra ones are usually stored off the body...somewhere.

You would be surprised how many times this happens, I work at an Airport and have seen it many times, We even had a local Cop turn up to fly out and still had a gun strapped on his ankle:eek:.
You should see what folks leave in the rental cars, We have found 6 pistols untold ammo and fully loaded clips:eek:

I can't imagine it either and especially someone whose husband is such a high profile advocate. Makes me wonder if this wasn't staged. Interested in seeing the outcome.

He might have meant Garand (really an en-bloc), Mauser, Springfield, Enfield or Nagant clips. ;)
Only way to carry extra ammo for a broomhandle.

Can't read a feller's mind you know. :D ;) :)

Always wanted to have a stripper leave her clips in my car...hasn't happened yet though.

Really folks. This was an error. A mistake. It's a damn shame that in the State of Texas this could result in a ten year prison sentence. AT worst it should be a misdemeanor. the lowest class of misdemeanor. I do not know the circumstances, but I fear the government is going to make her an example and wish they had arrested her husband. Had that gun gotten on the airplane, do any of you believe it would have posed a threat. Guns on airplanes are not dangerous. errorists on airplanes are dangerous. Contrary to what Janet Nepalotano said, Conservatives are not terrorists.
We really need to get out of this guns on planes mentality is a bad thing.

travel that includes airplanes/airports is the only thing I dread in life.
before you may board your flight, you must remember to remove all metal objects (good luck if you have metal parts internally holding you together), take off your shoes , give up your wallet and other valuables, be subject to electronic body scans.

TSA and the "fear" of terrorist is a complete joke. those that desire to enter an aircraft with evil intend do and have done quite easily. TSA does nothing more than project the illusion of safety to those who walk the straight and narrow.

perhaps if we weren't so eager to "mess" with folks in other countries, the "fear" would vanish.

This is why I don't like "perfectly legal" type laws. They turn legals into illegals. Sure, it was an honest mistake and it could have been prevented with some proper prior planning or better oversight. That's not the point though. There is never a good reason why an honest citizen shouldn't be allowed to carry.

"Shall not be infringed"

There's not a BUT in the whole thing.

I work with a government group that ends up with a lot of the confiscated TSA stuff for this area. Sure they get knives and nail clippers, but also machetes, weed whackers (I kid you not), inert hand grenades, blank rounds, you name it.

I check my bag with a fine tooth comb.

Mrs. Nugent will be fine. The story I read said they've found 57 guns in carry on bags this year iirc, and they have plenty of money for an attorney to get it all dismissed as what it is - an honest mistake that didn't risk or harm anyone.

It's good to be reminded of this.

We've had a couple of incidents at our local airport here in Fayetteville (near Fort Bragg) involving active-duty military personnel who attempted to board aircraft with weapons or explosives in their baggage. These appeared to be honest mistakes as well, but still, if we allow ourselves to become so accustomed to carrying that we forget where our weapons are, there needs to be a wake-up call at the very least.

I stopped flying about 25 years ago,I couldn't stand it.I can't imagine what it's like now!

I'm with you! When I checked my bag at the curb and was asked for "your papers please" and a photo ID. Then asked if there was anything in my bad that I didn't know about! What? I believe Al Gore was the person who claimed credit for keeping everyone safe while flying!!! I stopped putting up with the fools.

I'll drive, thank you.

Yes really. If you pull someone over for speeding are you going to fall the "mistake" routine?

We all make mistakes yes. But we must all pay for those mistakes. A mistake with a firearm is inexcusable.

I know where ALL my guns are at all times as I'm sure you do too. Everyone should.

Sure, suspend her license to carry for thirty days if in fact she put the gun in that bag. Perhaps she did not.

My point is that a ten year felony is ridiculous. And if we are licensed to carry why make it illegal to carry on a plane?

We are over paranoid. We sacrifice liberty for safety and we have lost liberty and we are no safer.

Hey I agree! BUT, she broke the law! Yes a stupid law but it is the law. These are the kind of mistakes the gun carrying public cannot make.
