Does anyone think the "Police sitting position" is a bit risky for the foot? It's the one people use in PPC match. You sit on the ground. One leg is fully extended, point toward the target. The other leg is bent, knee pointing up. You put your gun on top of the bent leg for support. It is a very stable position, but one of your foot is way out in front of the barrel.

Doesn't seem too dangerous with a rifle. The equivalent positions with a handgun seem kind of dodgy though.

Yup, just inside of the hard joint, on the muscle/flesh, is more stable. I have a very ad-hoc seated shooting technique, but I do like the position. Me shooting a SCAR in Afghanistan:

Dont think its much of a problem, 50% shoot with the gun against the opposing knee, allows a little more room for your stomach, so the foot is pretty safe. In over 30 years , never heard of someone shooting their foot in the sitting position , however numerous incidents where persons have shot their foot in the standing position, drawing etc.

I'm referring to the Police pistol course. Notice this guy holds his revolver high on his knee. I was taught to hold mine lower for better stability. My legs are kind'a short. The top of my foot is about about 12 inches from the path of the bullet. So no flinching. But still seems like not safe.

Usually the gun is held so tight against the knee that it would take a monster flinch to get the muzzle close to pointing at the foot. Likewise, I have never heard of anyone shooting themselves in the foot while in the sitting position.

Can you roll your foot either to the left or right to minimize height?

I wear size 13 boots and I roll my left foot to the left. I do support the gun much lower than in your pic. I am 6'03".

The head of the drug unit was dry firing his "empty" revolver talking on the phone with his feet on the desk....you guessed it, a loud bang, a quick trip to the ER, and we called him "Lt Nine Toes" until he retired....and he still walks funny
But back in the day when we "had" to shoot like that, it never occurred to me that I might shoot myself...and yes, we were taught to rest against the knee, not on top of it

Administrators (Desk Bound Commandos) should not be armed nor should they be allowed to eat with forks (spoons only).

I expected to see stools, a counter, and a cute young wiatress pouring coffee and serving donuts.
:D
Thought maybe I'd been doing it wrong and could learn somethin'..........
:p

We once had a big shootout at my old PD when a kidnapper walked into a coffee shop with his victim. There were three officers in there having coffee. When the smoke cleared, he was DRT. Moral of the story: (1) if you are a BG, don't go places where cop cars are sitting. (2) if you are a GG, always be ready, even when having coffee.

Oh yeah, I never figured out why we had to shoot that position. I always shot off of my left knee. The butt of my revolver would sit just below my kneecap. I got pretty good at it but never could understand why we had to do that. I did complain to NRA LEAD about the position but to no avail.

As I get closer to retirement, the position starts to make more sense. It closely duplicates the position I use in my Lazy Boy.

Back in the early 80's I shot a match in MO, MO State Sports Shooting Assn or such. Exactly like NRA ppc except at the 50 they shot prone, standing(offhand) left/ right barricade. I liked it, but was alot steadier back then. Sitting has its place , shot several deer in that position.HA! Happy Holidays ! Bob

Their union would negotitate a compromise of "sporks".

A housing cop I worked with got in a struggle with some mutt in a project hallway. The mutt knocked the cop down (prison muscles) and the cop drew his gun and fired. Shot went through his own foot into the bad guy. DOA. Cop got 3/4 disability pension.
