Powders for .38 Special

Use these two:

Alliant Bullseye
Winchester W231 = Hodgdon HP-38

I've used Unique exclusively for 9mm, .38 S&W, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, and .45 ACP. As for 125 grain plated bullets in .38 Special, for standard loads, I would suggest starting at 5.5 grains of Unique and work up from there. For +P loads, I would suggest 6.5 grains as a starting point. Of course the lawyers for the powder companies have cut the loads back. I started reloading back in the early 1970's, using the Hornady Handbook Volume 2. I later acquired the Hornady Third edition and the Speer Number 10, as well as the Sierra Bullets Second Edition. The loads I use are higher than those I suggested as a starting point, and I have yet to blow up a gun. -Ed.

For 38 spl, most guys shooting PPC matches in our Montreal club use W231/HP-38 and Titegroup. This is all we seem to be able to get in our area. If we could get BullsEye, we would buy it :-) But the 231 really gets the job done.
