Prayers going up from SC. Good news -- it's a local call.
I had my thyroid ablated(?) with a radioactive pill a few years back. I found it hilarious, after all the warnings, that I could swallow a radioactive pill...but only directly from the lead-lined case and not using my own hand to pop the pill. Really, really?
Same here Badger! I have Grave's Disease and did the radioactive thing as well. It was very unique experience to say the least! While it was all very serious I couldn't help but laugh through it.
Morning of treatment:
go to hospital and locate the Nuclear Med area (by the morgque. Really? No one else on the floor which happens to be the basement?!)
To into office, everyone happy, cheery, knows you by name instantly! (wait, there's no one else there other than staff)
Go into room, lined in lead. Staff member comes in also covered in lead. Staff person opens led canister and dumps out smaller lead canister and then dumps 2 pills into paper cup. (all while wearing lead gloves, which go with the entire lead suit.) At this point I realize I'm the only one/thing in the room not protected by lead. Person hands you cup and says "Take this but don't touch it" and leaves quickly. What?! OK, swallow pills and walk out of room.
Leaving: No one around. The office has turned into a ghost town and then you have to walk out and past the morgue again and go straight home because hey, you're now radioactive and get be near ANYONE or ANYTHING with a heartbeat! for DAYS!
The worst part for me was the diet before hand to clear my thyroid of iodine. Now *that* was brutal! Being radioactive was amusing.
Here's hoping she makes it through the diet and that all the treatments do the trick and she's healthy! It *will* take time for the doctors to get the dosage of her replacement meds just right so she'll have some ups and downs. (can take a year or 2 easily). She should also learn to be alert to changes that can be related to her levels. I was stable for about 15 years and am now having to go through readjustments. The symptoms I was having we chalked up to just getting older and working more but finally the blood work showed the truth and that my dosage was no longer adequate.
