Today I picked up a Gold K38 Masterpiece Box in very good shape IMO. The box is for a blue 6" but written 4" in grease pencil over the six and has a factory sticker on the opposite end indicating 4" barrel. It came with the Nox Rust Vapor paper and has gold metal corners. Serial # K209823. I wish the gun came in it but oh well! Probally sell it off since I only have $5 in it!

The last one I saw auctioned sold for $127.27, though it had the 6 inch HEAVY BARREL paper label on one end of the box.

I would normally expect a nice gold K38 box sell for between $60.00 to $90.00.

From my experience (which may be regional) I would up CJ's ante to $100 to $125

Hello CJ
I "Was" a Player in that auction up to $125.77 and let it go with a few seconds left on that auction. The end flap sticker is shown below and I have the same box but it is missing that sticker. Amazing what we will do to go the distance in our sport of serious collecting...:) Hammerdown

Hi Hammer,

Yes it is amazing what we'll do or pay in the pursuit of the hobby. You don't see the gold k38 boxes with that paper end label all that often, but they do pop up. That was the highest price I can recall seeing a gold K38 box sell for. I think it was an anomaly. Your run of the mill K38 gold box still sells for under $100.00 on that auction site. $60.00 to $90.00 seems to be the norm currently.

One that surprised me a while back was a standard gold K22 box that sold for something like $210.00. Prices just depend on who's watching and bidding. A K38 box that sells for $127 this week might only fetch $$80.00 next week. There are lots of them out there, albeit most without the "Heavy" paper label and it's not unusual to see 2 or 3 being auctioned at the same time. As with all things, there are dry spells that push prices up and delight auction sellers.

I've got a factory labeled gold box with printing that just says K-38 MASTERPIECE - 6 inch barrel - blue finish - Target Hammer. Same type of label as above, but without the word "HEAVY". I'll see if I an get a pic up later.

Lol, I stopped at $75.00 with an hour left. I went and worked out and all the time had bidders remorse. lol

Yep, I got to chasing a K-32 box on GB last week, even I realized it was getting stupid after I bid last. Oh yeah, I got outbid on it too.

yessir, seems high to us also, but who knows as to the "pucker factor" ( how bad do you really want it?)
they were around the $50-75 range ,and the K-22's were pushing the $100 and over, but today??? yikes......

VALUE = Price that something trades between a "Willing Buyer and Willing Seller"

Here is my best indicatation of value --- I'll give you $60 for the box if it is in decent shape.:) That is what it is worth to me.

Hello Richard & Dan
I would give $60.00 for Just the sticker. I have the Gold & Blue Box for my K-38, but the sticker was added when they changed Barrel ribs to the wider rib style. I suppose some wide rib K-38's got out the Door without the sticker affixed to the end flap, as Nothing Seem's to be Chisled in stone with S&W but it would be neat to have the sticker on a wide rib Gun Package for the eye appeal...

Like the Classic S&W Revolver's have done in The Past Five years or so, Cardboard has Taken a terrible Hike, sometimes to the Point of being Absurd. I Must admit I got caught up in the Bidding War, but the winner of that Box Paid a King's Ransom for what he got in the end. :p I bet you wish you had all the box's you Used to have a few years ago to sell now Don't you Dan ? :D Come to think of it, In today's world of High resolution Computer copiers I would be willing to Bet you could have someone make you up these stickers to look exactly like the original one show without much trouble...

When you consider that there were far more (gold) K-32 boxes than actual guns to fill them, it kinda makes me wonder why the prices on the boxes are so high. It's not like I'm gonna buy a box, then walk into my local shop and get a correct gun to put in it..... :D

Hammer:

Based on the OP's description, I would guess that the box was used to ship a K-38 Combat Masterpiece, rather than a "heavy barrel" Masterpiece. I have seen several gold K-22 and K-38 and for that matter even 357 boxes that have the 6" barrel length crossed out with grease pen and a shorter barrel length written in. Most K-__ ones that I have seen housed shorter Combat Masterpieces. As such, I don't think that the box is that unusual and hence the $60 indication of value.:)

Hello Richard
Nope, It was Indeed for a Pre-14 K-38 Target Masterpiece with a 6" tube, I wouldn't have Gone that Far on a Mock Box, This one was the Real Deal here's the rest of the Pictures...Hammerdown

Just to add that the last two gold K38 boxes recently auctioned went for $47.00 and $59.95. They just don't normally command high prices, especially in the standard configuration.
