I have not beemna able to buy small pistol primers for quite awhile now as no one has any in stock. Do you all think that hording by us reloaders is the major cause of this and that the manufacturers just can't keep up? Or do you think there might be other causes such as Military supply. Opinions welcome.

Hi Lilgragon, It's apparent with the new political situation that many shooters and reloads are in a buying frenzy to get ahead of an anti gun mentality. Hording if you will. I've done it a bit myself. It will settle down some time.

I was unable to buy because the price for Winchester Small Pistol had risen to $31.95 per 1000. Yikes ! ! !

At a match last week end I was told by a vendor that Wolf primers weren't coming in. Apparently the importers who have to pay in advance fear that Obama will sign an executive order and stop the importation. They would then end up stuck with a container full of primers off shore and not importable. Not sure how accurate this is but it sure sucks if true.

This is all hysteria with no basis. There is not one shred of evidence that any ban of any kind is being discussed. Lemming frenzy has bought up every primer, .223, and .308 round in the country. Wait a couple of months till those hoarding fools need cash and offer their stash @ 60 cents on the dollar. Oh yeah, if you sold your black rifles in the last month you should be able to buy those back cheap, as well. Sheesh.

Speaking as a hoarding fool reloader, I will not be selling my primer supply at 60 cents on the dollar considering their shelf life. Prices may, or may not be coming back down. Some I shoot with are already cutting back due to primer shortages. The real problem lies in the gun guys that do not reload, but are buying up the primers and then reselling them at a higher price. My supplier has been out of small and large pistol primers for at least 3 months, I use up 1000 a month.

IU admit I'm part of the problem. For years I bought both small and large pistol primers by the brick and rifle primers by the tray, because that made sense with the type of reloading I do. The last time I needed small pistol primers I ordered a sleeve of 5000 figuring I'd eventually use them. After looking in three gunshops for Small Rifle primers and finding none when I did find a brick I bought the whole thing.

So the spot shortages have caused me to buy in larger quantities. Though I have no intention of selling.

It's laws of economics...

Small supply/higher demand of primers=high prices

I have an idea of where the whole thing stems back to...

I think it may have something to do with military stashes of ammunition being sold off/scrapped in the Clinton era, and not being built back up in sufficient quantities during the last administration because we are shoot'n it faster than we can make it over in the multiple sandboxes...and large contracts to replenish the supplies being filled by the private ammunition companies.

This, as well as other reasons are contributions to the reasons for the shortages and hoarding.

Once these contracts are filled, we'll have ammo galore.
