Puppy Found On Road

My grandmother owned some horse property in the foothills of the Angeles national forest in southern california. People dumping pets in this area was such a problem there were signs on the side of the road stating it was illegal etc. My uncle ended up with a great bulldog that was dumped. Unfortunately some of these dogs bred with the local coyote population which created a real problem.

This is Buddy.

While I was in grad school, we got our first dog, a GSP named Maggie. I was spending my spare time (yeah, right!) working for various conservation groups that I belonged to. I was at a Quail Unlimited booth all day and came home that evening. My better half met with the door with "Is there something you want to tell me?"

Now, as a newlywed of 10 years, I KNEW that was a loaded question and that the road ahead was full of potholes, dips, rocks and shoals and a few tank traps. So I studied the situation and diplomatically answered "Not until I know what I'm accused of?

Seems someone had dropped Buddy (she had already named him-anyone see a pattern here?) off in our fenced backyard. Well, we notified Animal Control, posted flyers and checked with our mailman. Nobody knew him, so after the requisite time, we took him to the vet.
Part of my graduate work included estimating the age of bears from tooth wear. So, the vet and I agreed he was likely about 6 years old. His neck had been trimmed, sio he had worn a collar, which someone removed.

Well, he was a nut case! If you know Shakespeare, he was the character Falstaff in canine form. Loved the ladies and it was reciprocated, terror of barnyard animals but a coward when it came to camping (liked his creature comforts). He moved with us from SoCal to Norcal and then to Washington. Would try to escape every time it snowed, but didn't realize all we had to do was follow his tracks (five minutes in the cold and he was back at the door, shivering anyways!). When he was about 12 or 13 he was diagnosed with a malignant bone cancer in his upper jaw. Surgery would mean removing most of his snout, one eye, and all his teeth for maybe 2 more years of life. We decided to let him live his life out (which was expected to be 5-6 weeks more) as comfortably as possible.

That *** lived 5 more years (cancer regressed) and it took kidney failure, heart congestion, diabetes and liver failure to finally do him in!

Since him, all of our dogs have been pound puppies (3 more shorthair pointers, a whippet-terrier, and a psychotic Maltese)

Cats and dogs go missing all the time. Before you get attached glad to hear you are doing everything you can to get it back to it's owner if it was not abandoned. Probably most people who abandon animals do it more as the animals get older and require more care. At this point the newness and cutesy have worn off and these types of individuals have become bored and move on to new things. You see it all the time. So many do not understand that taking of a pet is a lifelong endeavor. Pets are not part time or the latest fad. But as bad as that is I believe as others that most are lost and I feel for the owners who are trying desperately to get them back. I have lost two cats since building my home in 2007. My step daughter just lost hers a few months ago. It hurts.

I'm not a dog owner, we have a couple male cats that own the house where we live. Not a dog hater, just don't have time to devote to them, walks, etc. But that doesn't change my love for domestic animals. No doubt, if it was me, that pup would be chasing my cats around (or the other way...).

My annual charitable donation is to a No-Kill Shelter where one of my cats was adopted from.

Heaven has a special place for you. Hell (hopefully) has a special place for the person that dumped the puppy for the coyotes to eat.

Roady, you may never know how lucky you were that some wonderful people came along when they did. Make sure you take good care of them.

My last dog was a Rottweiler. I got her from the pound. She was about 2 yrs old and quite frail. I brought her back to good health and she was my best friend for 8 yrs. Not long ago I had to put her down because of a serious illness. I'll always remember the great times together.
Dogs are better than most people!

Over the last 10 yrs I've adopted 4 that someone dumped by my home. They are the best. I liked them more than most people.

In the words od Will Rogers "If dogs don't go to heaven, then I want to go where they go when I die.

God bless you. That's how we got Dixie, some excuse for a human being booted her out of a car at one of the busiest intersections in Memphis. Maybe a year old and in heat a friend of mine saw the whole thing and took her home. She paid for everything at the vet just told my wife and I we could have her. She had three labs so keeping her wasn't in her plans. That was seven years ago and Dixie has turned out to be the best dog we ever had. They just know when they've gone from a bad situation to a good one and let you know it.

Dixie and I at Lookout Mountain about two years ago.

is that your every day carry? nice dog, she looks happy

I found a beautiful Airedale pup on the road once. No collar, no chip.

Took it home and my wife and I fell in love with him. He was the gentlest and most beautiful dog I had ever seen. We took him to the vet and had him checked out, got him his shots and a physical and he was just fine.

But I knew I had to look for his owners. I hoped we couldn't find them, but we posted ads in the paper and notified all the local vets.

We received a call from a vet about 3 days later that said he thought he knew a person that lost a dog, so we called the people he told us about and they said did lose an Airedale like the one we found.

I drove the dog out to their house which wasn't but maybe a mile from where I found him and the couple came out and said, "yep, that's our dog. Thanks for bringing him back." And with that they walked back toward their house.

That was it! No thanks. No sorry he got out. No nothing.

My wife was so mad she wanted to steal him back! She always looked for him on that road and I know if she found him she'd take him home....

So please do look for the owners. I always think there may be a small child crying themselves to sleep because their dog is gone.... :(

.

Of all dogs the Airdale is the perfect dog for a kid..Loyal, fearless, and protective. They deserve the same love and loyality that they will give. Truly the king of Terriers. Teddy Roosavelt and Jim Thorp both loved the Airdale. Often overlooked as a hunting companion. As said about the Airdale they will do anything any other dog will and can do and then whip the other dog if needed......Courage and toughness but with a loving chactor......Yea I have had three, Not a cul in the bunch..Life span pretty much 12 to 14.....When they get sick you will not even know it. They even suffer in dignity. They deserve a loving home. I agree with your wife!!!!

A couple of years ago, I was visiting my brother and this small dog showed up and started trying to get to my nephew's rabbits and chickens. Robert caught the dog and put in in their workshop. It did not have a collar and he was going to take several miles away and let it go. I told him that I would take it home with me. I took the dog to the vet and it was in heat and had heart worms. I had it fixed and treated it for the heart worms. Now in the evening, it is normally attached to my wife's hip when she is watching TV. Foxy and our Cairn Terrier have become big buddies and they like to chase each other and hunt for lizards and frogs in the back yard.

Foxy is my avatar on the forum and here is an action photo in the back yard.

HOOYAH too you sir! As too the *********** that dumped the puppy, I hope I get to make your acquaintance some day SOON!
And the reason why, they don't care! Dale

Some people have suggested putting up found dog posters. I would caution against this and simply call local spcas and keep an eye on lost and found craigslist. The reason for this is because there are people who will try to claim the dog and use it for malicious purposes such as a bait dog. I don't say this because theoretically this could happen but because this is not unheard of in my part of Virginia.

This is my best friend.

And it became this :) My best friend bec he would die to keep me safe.

Thanks to all for the kind words. I don't believe that I did anything that most people would not do. I won't know until Monday if he is coming home with me because he is at my Vets and they are running his picture on their websight. I will post his picture when I get him home. Thanks to all of the dog lovers on this forum.
