purchasing via money order

I generally ask for payment by USPS money orders if I am selling a high priced item (such as a gun) here on the forum, but mostly I tell a buyer that a personal check is fine whether I know them or not. About half send payment by m.o. anyway. I also usually ship the smaller items within 24 hours of getting an "I'll take it" along with their address. The transactions I have made here easily number over 100 and I ain't been stiffed yet! I have found over the years that "gun guys" are more trustworthy than the population in general. And that's a FACT!
f.t.

What Tom said, I have never had a problem with USPS money orders.

How much was your PO for? I did all that and kept following up both by phone and on-line for months... Nothing.

The Postal MO was for $150 for a gun bought on an auction
site. I should have known better because the seller's few pics
were blurry and he had several negative feedbacks. The gun
was described as excellent however and I was to have a
three day inspection period. When the gun arrived I saw that
it was worthless heavily rusted junk. It was much more rusty
inside than out and the bore was ruined. The firing pin was
broken and rusted in place. I figured the gun must have been
under water or just left out in the weather. I tried to contact
the seller to return the gun but he wouldn't return emails or
phone voicemails. His mailing address was a PO box number
and he wouldn't answer mail. When I complained to the PO
I got a registered letter from the seller who now was very
anxious to make things right. The PO had contacted him and
told him to square the deal or lose his US mail "privileges",
yes privileges not rights. He was very happy to make me
happy by taking the gun back and returning my money.

Appreciate the feedback

When I was a kid I'd tag along with my dad to Charlie's Hardware where his wife ran a post office out of a plywood cubicle in the middle of the shop. When my wife mentioned something similar in a local pharmacy I stopped in after work for a money order. Hesitated when I saw the place specialized in organic/herbal cures and overpriced orthopedic devices, but pressed for time and facing another double shift the next day I carried forward.
The wait in line wasn't bad, five minutes or so and I passed the time fantasizing drop kicking the three year old who seemed intent on trashing the place while his mother stood by saying "No, No" whenever she managed to unglue the cellphone from her head.
Made it to the counter where I was informed by the meter maid persona working there, who sweetened right up when I acted as if I had all the time in the world, that they only sold money orders by Global Express. Hesitated again due to the time constraint and took what I felt was a giant flyer and went ahead.
Contacted the seller later that evening to let know what was coming and they were okay with it so put things together and Mrs. Native posted at the same place the next day due to the fact I sent it certified for the tracking.
I think for next time I'll keep some certified mail tags in a drawer, have everything together in one sock so when I hit the Post Office (U. by God S.) and purchase the actual USPS m.o. I can pay for and post at the same time.
I do believe, after all, to give people what they ask for.
By the way, $1.50 for the money order and $3.30 for the certified tag. Worth it, I guess.

If you think the Post Office will hunt down someone who scams you and keeps your money, you're dreaming. :(

Well I wasn't dreaming when they arrested the scammer. The Post Office has there own Federal Police force and they take any kind of mischef seriously. Might take a little while but they will find him.

USPS MO are also traceable online.

Being the non trusting type after being screwed over a couple times by sending money orders and getting nothing in return, I will only use Pay Pal. If something goes wrong, I file a grievance with Pay Pal and it gets fixed. I have never been hosed when using Pay Pal, but I also do not purchase when the seller demands the payment as a "gift", throws up big red flag and shows me the seller is cheap, can't handle paying the small fee to Pay Pal.

Another negative for the USPSMO

I had one seller insist that I make payment using the USPSMO, I did and the item didn't show up and I went to the Post Office to learn that my troubles had just begun. Am not sure of the details but I was upset by their reply. Something to the effect that it was my tough luck, fortunately for me, the purchase arrived eventually. My hope is that I never find anything else that is impossible to do without and that requires payment vie the USPS Money Order, I'll just do without it!

I went to my bank for an MO during my first transaction. The teller told me it was cheaper to use USPS than the $5 the bank wanted for an MO.

I went to USPS and they charge $1.25 for MOs under $500. A little more over that.

I have used USPS ever since with only one problem when the seller said they didn't receive the MO. I filed a claim with USPS which stopped payment and they verified it had not been cashed. I had to wait 90 days, but I got my money back.
