I just picked up a replacement hammer for my '69 Model 60 since I want a bobbed hammer for CC use but don't want to cut the original hammer.

My concern now is what will the hammer, which is flash chromed, look like after I bob it?

Is there a way to make the cut portion look like the rest of the hammer?

I'm sure others have done this. Can someone post pictures?

The area you cut away will be polished steel. If you take it to a 600 grit it will look fine. If you want to "match" the chrome, then tape off the parts of the hammer that still have chrome and bead blast the cut portion.

Why don't you see if you can find one of the factory bobbed hammers such as those used in the NYPD Model 60? That way you piece wears a factory (un-modified) hammer and you don't have to worry about fixing the apperance.

In case you're interested the factory part # for the bobbed J frame hammer is 039110000. The factory does not carry them any more but you can occasionally find one on Gunbroker. It will look a lot better than cutting one off.

Looks a lot prettier than a chop job:

The other thing that looks nice on a J frame is a Bodyguard hammer (these are also made in stainless for a 649):

Are you looking to have both DA and SA capability? Bobbing a conventional hammer will allow you to have SA by lifting the hammer slightly with the trigger and pulling back on the top of the hammer. The factory bob jobs eliminate the SA notch. We had guys on our range with that setup and had no problem as long as everyone was firing DA. Not a real safe setup SA either cocking the hammer or releasing it in the event the shooter decided not to fire. When I was rangemaster, I would not allow SA firing with the conventional bobbed hammer jobs.

Thanks for the info. I have not been able to find a factory bobbed hammer but I may decide to keep looking and hold off on the bob job for a little while. However, I think the ability to have both DA and SA would be nice and I understand the factory bobbed hammer is DAO.

I have been looking for one that would fit my Model 64 for some time now. I hope you have better luck that I have. I believe my problem has been a lack of factory bobs for the 64.
