Question regarding moving with guns

Would you all think I would be OK with my Winchester 69A in a soft case for transport in the box of my truck (with locking hard tonneau cover) if I pack the bolt and magazine in one of the ammo boxes? Those will be locked too. Or do I need to buy a hard locking case? Of course I would take all the guns into the room each night.

Would that be enough in Illinois?
If a person was to follow that procedure would they be safe passing through?

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof...

That--the very first sentence--tells you "Federal law says you're ok, but state and local laws/rules/regulations may say something else."

If you're out of line with a state or local law, you can wave a
copy of US Code all ya want, and it won't help a bit.

I have moved several times and may move this summer. I put my guns in cases in y
The trunk or in the back of my coveted truck. At night they go in motel room. I stay only in motels where I can park outside the room and carry guns directly into the room. When stopping for gas or food one of us or both keep the vehicle in sight.
Having guns shipped is expensive and risks damage.

1) Learn where your PA carry license is valid.

2) You should have already gotten Florida and Utah so you can carry as many places as possible. If not, write us all a memo explaining why you failed to do so.

3) If you are not carrying: locked cases in the back of the pickup, out of sight under other stuff, and the cover or whatever should also be locked.

4) Don't drive like an idiot, and you probably won't get stopped. If you get stopped, pay someone to slap you, because you are an idiot.

5) If you are not carrying, don't say a darned thing about having guns.

6) Under no condition should you ever consent to a search. Period. If you do, it is too late for slap therapy - pay an MMA fighter to beat you like a pinata.

When my Dad died in AZ 15 years ago, I brought his gun collection home with me in his car. While I
arranged shipping of his furniture by a moving company.

Since it was a small car, the long rifles wouldn't fit in the trunk, so I put long gun ammo in the trunk
and the rifles on the floor behind the front seat. I put the handguns in the trunk and the handgun ammo on the back
seat.

That satisfied my interpretation of the law (appropriate ammo separate from the separate firearms). I did cover the rifles and pistol ammo in the back seat with a blanket and topped that with luggage and clothes. This satisfied Fed regs and it caused
me no problems.

For common sense, I did have a loaded 1911 with me in the front seat for protection. With my IND permit I was cool until ILL.

Stayed with the traffic flow in; AZ, NM, TX, OK, MO. In St. Louis, my Illinois Cousin met me and took my .45 and followed me from St Lewis until Terre Haute IN. So I was legal the whole trip! I did back down to 1 under the speed limit in ILL and went 5 to 10 mph over the speed limit except ILL without a hitch.

Got all home to Indy in 2 days without a problem.

Not moving, but when traveling from MA to America, I avoid NJ like the plague. I keep my guns looked in a case in the back seat of my pick up truck until I'm safely in PA. From there south, for the most part it's clear sailing. Even MD isn't bad, as long as you don't drive like a maniac.

I also avoid NYC, but that's in general, not just related to guns.

As to moving, I've thought a bit about that, although I have no immediate plans.

My plan is to rent a truck, load my guns and ammunition in and drive. By load my guns and ammunition, I mean move my gun safes into the truck and then put the guns inside. I'll probably get a Job Box for the ammunition.

I left New Yorkistan with my SUV loaded with handguns and rifles. I kept to the speed limit, signaled every lane change, didn't stop at all, and prayed all the way through NJ, and MD.
I survived 4 hours of horror but when I got to VA, my heart rate dropped back to normal. :)
