Question? Should Gun Stores Require NRA Memberships For Purchases?

I have been trying to think of a polite, tactful way to say this is really a bad idea, for a number of reasons. The first one is--No, I won't do it. The harder you push, the more I resist. If my joining the NRA is that important to you, you pay for it. 70 million gun owners can not all be wrong.

It sounds too much like "join the party, or else".

with some issues in NEW YORK, CALIFORNIA, COLORADO and ILLINOIS for starters.

ACTIVISM and a LARGE MEMBERSHIP are now becoming a necessity.

I would say throwng in a NRA membership with a gun purchase would be the way to go. This way, everybody who owns a gun who is not already a member can have his membership subsidized at no cost, giving the new member a year to experience the value of membership. After the first year, the member can either re-new his membership, or walk away.

If anything gun manufacturers and dealers should offer to pay for gun buyers first/next year membership to the NRA. Taurus used to. I don't know if they still do or not.

I admit, on the surface it seems like a good idea because if there were 80 million NRA members you can bet that we'd have a much different representation in government. But, as everyone else said, you'd be putting conditions around a right. Also, the NRA might represent us right now, but who's to say that that could change sometime in the future? Who's to say that another organization would represent us better? My gun club requires it to be a member and that I do agree with.

To purchase, I would expect the dealer to HIGHLY RECOMMEND it, but not require it. After all, the last thing we'd want to do is scare away potential new gun owners coming into the fold who are just learning about why this particular right is so important.

My thoughts as well. I choose my friends and the voluntary organizations to which I belong (now down to just one that is noted for anonymity). No one is going to force me to a choice. The Constitution gives me the right to own weapons, so no one is going to abridge my right to purchase them as long as I can pass the rudimentary required background check. As a famous Texan once put it, "I don't push worth a damn."

I do not think it should be mandatory, and if lgs gave a year with purchase great, but would they just jack the price up to cover that cost? Then what if you buy more than 1 gun in a year. Think most people just see $$ and decide they would rather spend it elsewhere. I just joined but did take advantage of a special offer, but still thought about it for a couple weeks before doing it. I would think they could do something as I have not saw a NRA brochure at my lgs. The link still comes up guess if your interested you can try this.

Every gun I've bought recently (4 of them) has had an NRA pamphlet with it offering $10 off a 1 year membership. The first one I bought, prompted me to join after letting my membership lapse over 10 years ago. I passed my pamphlets out to other friends, prompting them to join as well.
