Ithe has been a while so maybe you guys here can refresh me. The 586-1 I picked up Isome a stainless variant naturally. Apparently all the 586-1 I search about are blued. I had forgotten the 5 and 6 rule for blued and stainless. So what is the deal? It is a 586 but not blued. I looked up info on it here on the forum and didn't find much. Anybody have any info on the revolver?

SW produced a few of these in stunning nickel, unless it has been refinished in chrome or some other sad thing. Or, it could be a mis-stamped 686 some of which have shown up on this forum.

It doesn't appear to be refinished. It is for sure stainless steel, 100%. I am just unsurenough of why.

From the pictures, it appears that somebody had it hard chromed or some other type of aftermarket finish. You can see the "grain" in the finish - stainless would not have that appearance. Also the front sight, trigger and hammer appear to have been done.

Nice gun - don't despair, nothing wrong with that as a shooter.

6=stainless
5=not stainless. Could be blue. Could be nickel.
Mis-stamped is not out of the question.
A buddy of mine told me of a model 15 he saw that was stamped MOD 17 or 18 (I forget which). He was convinced that the info he'd read about which models were made in which calibers was wrong.
I explained to him that frames were sometimes stamped with incorrect model numbers.

If you post pics of your revolver, we can help determine if it's nickel, stainless, hard chrome, etc.
Nickel, like aluminum, has a whitish tinge.
Stainless and chrome have a bluish tinge.

That is plating. It's been refinished, right down to the hammer and trigger. Looks like electroless nickel.

The finish on the hammer and trigger appears to match the rest of the gun. If so, it is refinished. Could be chrome or one of the Robar finishes.

Ok, there was some posting going on while I typed my reply.
That looks like electroless nickel to me.
That, or it was bead blasted and hard chromed.
I have a 586 I'm thinking about getting refinished.
They are great shooters.

I forgot that electroless nickel doesn't have the whitish tinge of polished nickel.

I bet that gun has an action that is slick as snot on a doorknob.

If if were a mis-stamped 686, the finish would look like monkeys took Scotchbrite to the gun.

Upon further examination. You guys may be right, you have me second guessing myself. It still looks great though. I am happy with it. Going to get some nice grips to compliment the finish either way. Maybe I can get the numbers run by someone to find out for sure. You are right though Jaymo the action is slick lol

Yeah, the more stainless I see the more my finish looks refinished. I am ok with it either way though. It looks great and I grabbed up some scrap wood today at the local dulcimer shop. I am going to work on some grips soon.

Fwiw, that finish looks more durable/easy to clean than any factory finish. Great looking 586

Would a 586 no dash have an "N" on the cylinder face indicating a factory nickel finish?
