The road near Ocracoke and Hatteras on the Outer Banks, post Dorian.
Looks like Ocracoke and lower Hatteras will be closed except for boat access for quite a while. That looks like it nearly cut a new inlet to the sound.
I've logged many miles on that road going to fish the area's surf.
Maybe it's a good thing it's inaccessible now. The advent of easy beach access via every obnoxious body having an AWD SUV has ruined the beach experience. I always went there to get away, not have 58 party people with 10 obnoxious boomboxes within earshot while I just watched the surf and fished a bit.
There was a time when I'd sit on the beach all day and not see another person except a fishing buddy.

This is my best friend Lance. He moved in next door to me back in December 1963. We still do a lot together.

We took a ride up Mineral Fork Canyon, my very favorite trail to ride and I have a couple of favorite sections and this is one of them.

It was a beautiful day for a ride.

This is the view from the waste rock at the Wasatch Mine that sits at about 8,800 feet.

The Wasatch Mine adit.

Here's the switchback that leads up to the Regulator Johnson Mine.

We encountered wild animals along the way.

My very favorite section of trail.
This takes us up to the Regulator Johnson Mine that sits at a lofty 10,121 feet, near the top of the canyon. There's over 4000 ft gain in altitude in just over 5 miles.

Mining was started in Mineral Fork in the 1880s. The mines were looking mining silver, gold, copper, and lead. Between the Wasatch and Regulator Johnson Mine, there were over 5,500' of tunnels, though neither mine produced much.

Here we are at the summit looking aback at what we just came up.

There's still some of the old equipment scattered around the mines.

Including the old ore car tracks exiting the Regulator Johnson Mine.

This trail isn't for beginners as we see not all machines make it back out safely. :(

Just a few random pics of the remains of some old equipment.

Heading back down. :)

Another peak at the Wasatch Mine.

Too poor to go away, and not having a neighborhood pool, we had Tar Beach. Was it ever hot on the roof.

Like those old grainy b&w film shots. Those girls look ready to party with their booze over to the side, and maybe some cannoli or some leftover braciole alla napoletana in that bag like my cousin Martina used to make. Wonder if that's some of the Tisi girls. I had a photographer friend in the Bronx back in 2004, shot film in a retro style, lots of deep blacks and overexposed shadows like this one. Was quite successful at it. He hung around with the late George Pitts. Last I heard, he was doing high-dollar fashion work in Germany now.
