So I was sorta right. Coffee = emergency/essential serviceExcellent guesses! The pictured model was a coffee wagon donated by the Philadelphia Christian Commission. Each urn has a fire box at the bottom and it was estimated that 100 gallons per hour could be produced. It was painted red to distinguish it as a non-combat vehicle.
That reminded me of a quote from a soldier involved in the D-Day invasion who had scaled ladders up the cliff. Visiting the site a few years ago he said, "Would someone please tell me how the heck we did this?"Wooden ladders, iron men.
