I lived just outside Denver from '85 to '90. Bought a book called "Jeep Trails To Colorado Ghost Towns".
I bought FS maps and we spent the weekends camping and checking out old ghost towns - we saw tons of them. Some of them you had a hard time even fining the footings of the old buildings.
That one is American City in Gilpin county.I think I may have had that same book (R.Brown? Or maybe Forrest Crossen?) The author was very vague on the exact location and I couldn’t find it,but was very close to it on several deer hunts( buried myToyota for two days on one)back then.A few years ago I was looking at a paper map and there it was!
Grabbed my gps and went bushwhacking
Had a lot of fun back then jeeping ,biking and skiing into these places
I've heard about American City but never been there.
Wish I'd had a digital camera back then. I have very few pictures from all the ghost towns we visited.
The book I have was written by R. Brown. It took us a lot of amazing places.
This was one of our favorite places t go, Holy Cross City.
This was back before the Army Corp of Engineers filled in the mud bog just prior to the city and before the town was blocked off. We camped in the city a few times. It was an awesome road from Gold Gulch to Holy Cross.
