My range bag is worse than my purse, lots of stuff, all jumbled and I have the nagging feeling I'm both missing things I should have and carrying things I don't need.

So,

What goes into your range bags?

Do you have different ones for different guns?

Do you keep them packed all the time or just grab and go loading an empty bag for a particular range session?

Mine is just a small Everlast gym bag. It collects assorted brass, it has a few new sets of foam ear plugs, a tablet of 1/4" grid, perforated sheets, 1" orange target dots, screwdriver, pens, markers, stapler, shooting glasses, extra ear muffs, and no telling what else. If I'm taking centerfire guns, the ammo will be in there, if I take rimfire, I have a seperate plastic container full of different .22 ammo. It usually is untouched after it comes back from the range, then I check it for what I need before leaving for the range, the next time.

My range bag has the key to the range gate, a spotting scope and small tripod, a stapler and spare staples, a roll of freezer tape to cover holes, a felt tip pen, and a small sight screw driver in it all the time. When I decide to go it also gets the ammo, guns go in cases.

I bought this rolling bag from Costco for about $30. I need the wheels, because it's heavy with guns and ammo, and I can't breathe well.
It's compartments are sized well to compartmentalize the range gear, guns and ammo.

Since I generally only take two, maybe three pistols to the range at a time, my bag is big enough to carry them along with appropriate ammo, my "eyes & ears", cleaning rags, chewing gum, utility blade, & a small assortment of tools. With a few boxes of ammo in it, it can get a little heavy...

I use three now.
One large range bag: (always goes with me but stays in car) with numerous different spare sets of glasses w/lens sets, range keys, shotgun cleaning kit, spare ear pro, spare coffee money, spare magnetic barrel rests, 2-3 spare box/hull carriers, bug spray, extra shooting towels, etc.
If I need something I can find it in this bag, or at least find something to work. This bag now holds all the stuff I bought that was going to make the difference to make my game awesome. It didn't work. :D

A smaller bag: goes with me to the clubhouse and to the fields and holds 4 boxes of 12ga, a barrel rest, coffee money, ear pro, one clear set of glasses- just in case, shooting card, the lucky shooting towel, etc.

Last is the pistol range bag: can hold 3 pistols/revolvers, small cleaning kit (oil, grease, boresnakes, screwdriver w/tips) 10" targets & pasters, a single bulk box of 22LR, ear pro, 3-4 sets of eye pro, etc.

Let's see if I can remember everything in my range bag..
- ammo can w/ a couple of boxes of ammo for each gun
- cleaning kit
- several pair of spare ear plugs
- spare shooting glasses
- a few small screw drivers
- a leather-man multi tool
- owb paddle holster for my P30
- bug spray, since I usually go to outdoor ranges
- old hand towel
- small rug, for laying guns on
- few targets
- sharpie
- can of rem oil

I'm not sure how much it weighs, but it's heavy

This bag is in addition to the UTG cases I have for each of my long guns

One bag contains all the peripherals... eyes, ears, stapler, first aid ...blah blah blah... and it stays in the truck. A supply of sticky targets also resides in the rear door side pocket of the truck. So all that stuff I never forget.

I use Midway pistol cases for each gun and magazines, little spare parts, optics batteries and any specialty tools for the particular gun as well as copy of tax stamps. All that stays together for each gun so I won't lose stuff. MidwayUSA Tactical Pistol Case

So that's about it. My main mission is to not forget and lose stuff.

Three Midway pistol cases fit into one Midway Compact Competition range bag. MidwayUSA Compact Competition Range Bag
I rarely take more than three handguns to the range. Quite often just one gun so I'll only tote the pistol case.

And of course grab whatever ammo cans I'll need.

I struggle with this constantly.

My current policy.

I have an NRA logo back pack that is my current range bag. It is big enough to hold two pistols/revolvers (in their cases) with a box of ammo each. In the next compartment I keep my over-the-ear ear protection and a 7" paper plate that I use to make my 7" target circles. In the top pouch on the exterior of the back pack I keep my CCW permit and ID and my range book. Also a sharpie to title my targets and draw the 7" target cirlce. In the lower pouch I keep my tools; a screwdriver, an allen wrench for my Victory (SW22) and a rod to clear any bore obstructions. I also keep my cell phone and camera in that pouch along with a set of in the ear ear plugs.

When I shoot my SW22 I carry it, five mags, a loader and a spare allen wrench in the SW22 range bag.

When I shoot my Shield 9mm and .22 M&P compact I have a range bag for them along with five mags each and the Uplula loader for the Shield.

I haven't got my range bags set in stone yet but am getting closer. Next year our outdoor range should be available and I'll have to change to handle the outdoor requirements.

I'm a little spoiled. I'm lucky to get there with ammo matching the pistol. I take my own hearing and eye protection, but everything else I could conceivably need is at the LGS where I shoot, and it's all readily available for me to use if I need it. He has an in house gunsmith, and the shop is also available to me. Plus, my range is about a three minute drive from the house, so I can always head back if I need something that the LGS doesn't have . . .

I guess mine are put together depending on what I'm shooting. The only things that are permanent in my range bag are brass rods for squib loads, (Only used once), a piece of leather that I wrap around the sandbags when I shoot revolvers (to keep from flame cutting the canvas bags). a couple large binder clips for hanging a piece of cardboard (if the target board is too shot up to hang a target). My targets supply rides under the mat in the rear of my SUV, my stapler, sandbag, orange 1" target circles, extra staples, ear plugs, old towel, fleece jacket all stay in the compartments in my SUV on a permanent basis. I add whatever I need for the individual trip, gun, ammo, chrono, holsters, etc.

I found that the cloth tool bags from Home Depot work very well. They come in different sizes so one just has to decide how much they want to carry. I usually take the one that says Bostitch on it. I can put 8 to 10 mags in there along with 2 pistols, ears, ammo and a few tools. There are a lot of small side pockets to put stuff in also.

I have three bags now:
  • Shotgun related stuff
  • Rifle and pistol related stuff (including training tools)
  • Magazines

Yes, the quantity of mags has become large enough to require their own bag. In fact, it's too small and I need something else.

If I may hijack a little, I'm in need of a new bag for my shotgun stuff. I'm a clays shooter and the zipper on one of the side pockets is broken. So, I need a new bag. Can someone recommend something?

I've got a Dillon range bag that's been in use for about 15 years or so. It usually has: A cleaning kit with solvent, oil, patches, rods, brushes and stuff. Some small tools to work on any gun that malfunctions or loosens up. Electronic ears, old towels, tape, AR 15 front sight tool, and usually some loose ammo and empty brass from recent range trips. It also carries 2 or 3 handguns and enough ammo and magazines for them. Oh, and a big marker and pens for when I'm instructing, because I always forget to bring one and it's embarrassing to ask the students for a marker to score their target.

-5 gallon bucket
-Eyes
-Ears
-Printer paper
-1" orange sticky dots
-Staple gun
-Staples
-Pen
-Pencil
-Various small tools
-Pistols
-Magazines
