Hello!

I may have the opportunity to participate in a hog hunt at the end of January. The hunt will be open for any firearm, but due to an arm injury, I think using a handgun could be the wiser move.

While I purchased this handgun almost 20 years ago for hunting and metallic silhouette, this would be the first time that it would be used for it's intended purpose.

My plan is to develop a magnum load for my Model 57. I have a number of 210gr JSP, which I believe were purchased as overruns from Remington. I am seeking advice for the type of bullet that could prove most effective for hogs: JHP or JSP? My intention is to limit my shots to about 60 yards.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The key is where you shoot them not the round. Either bullet type you mention is fine. They are frequently awfully hard to hit with a rifle, much less a handgun (because they root constantly). But I salute you for trying the handgun. Give the below a watch.

My dangerous game bullet for the 41 is a Wide Flat nose Gas check Semi wadcutter of approx 240-250 gr(according to alloy). No it doesn't really expand but it doesn't get any smaller. and it will go completely through most animals front to back(stem to stern or whatever you want to call it) I push mine to approx 1050 ft per second

I think that the Remington 210 JSP is plenty for feral hogs here in Texas. Now, there have been some monsters out there 400+ pounds and I haven't seen any of those shot with a handgun, but I would have no issue at all with the 57, 657, 58 and the 210 JSP. My preference would be the Marlin 1894 with those loads.

Good luck in your hunt :)

I too believe a good cast bullet preferably with a good meplat is the ticket . I use the LBT 240 GCLFN in my Henry & in my RBH either the NOE 240K , H&G 258 or LBT 240 FBWFN . All have more than enough penetration , will break shoulders & are accurate enough for behind the ear neck shot . The old standard mag pistol powders & primers work well with these bullets . H 110 / W296 , RS Enforcer / ACC 4100 , 4227 & 2400 . Henry seems to prefer Fed 155 primers & RBH likes WLP or CCI mag primers .

Your best penetration is going to be with a HC LBT / SWC type bullet. If you want to go jacketed, I am not sure about the Remington bullet, but I can strongly recommend the Hornady XTP bullet. I have used it for years in its .429 flavor on big game, and it always works well.

My one wild boar, years ago, was with the 240 grain .429 XTP at about 1250 fps. Deep penetration, lots of damage. He went maybe 10 yards.

I know the .41 caliber version of the XTP has a similar good reputation as a hunting bullet. Be wary of some of todays soft self defense bullets that trade expansion for penetration.

I HAVE USED THE 210 JSP ON MULE DEER IN WYOMING. AND I MEAN HIGH ALTITUDE MOUNTAIN BUCKS. THESE HAVE HUGE BODIES FOR DEER. IT'S A KILLER !
I LOADED IT WITH 19.5 GR OF VV N110. EXTREME ACCURACY WAS ACHIEVED WITH SLEDGE HAMMER EFFECT ON THE GAME. JP

Hi! I do like the concept of the hard cast LSWC. The only problem (at the moment) is that I am not set up to cast any. (I hadn't thought about buying.) The reason I brought up the JSPs, is because I have a coffee can of them that I tend to trip over every now and then!

That makes perfect sense, then, amigo - go get 'em! :)

I've used Hornady's 210 grain XTP hollow point with success on deer, over 21.8 grains of H110. Never hunted hog, so IDK. But like some above, depending on the size of the expected hogs, I might look hard at a heavier LSWC or lead thunder head type design that will ensure straight through penetration and give you more options on the angle of shot you can take while still delivering plenty of shock.

First of all I don't reload, yet... That being stated a group of us buy into a local farmer raising hogs for us. When it is time to slaughter a 22 LR fired at a right angle to their sloped forehead drops them instantly.

I traveled to Texas last year for hog hunting. My 629 6.5" bbl 44 mag with Underwood 220 gr Xtreme Penetrator rounds dispatched the hogs with none going more than 10-15 yards.

The standard 210 Remington JSP doesn't expand very much at handgun velocities. One of the posters here shot a lot of deer with them and the bullet just sailed through...resulting in very dead deer.

CorBon and Federal both use the 250 grain GC LBT bullet made by Cast Performance Bullet Company and one of the others who I can't remember. I've used a bunch of the CP made bullets with 20.0 grains of H110 and get 1305 fps from a 4.25" Freedom Arms 97...

Either bullet will put pork in the smoker...

I shot metallic silhouette competition for a while with an 8/38 in 57. I think I'm in the 215 hard cast Keith style bullet, loaded as hot as you can handle.
