I’ve become a lurker, due to many factors. The most being due to not shooting as much as I used too, and not buying any new firearms.
Living in the, not so great “free state” of Maryland has put somewhat of a damper not only me, but others too that are either senior citizens, low income families or both.
In 2013 a law was passed that in order to purchase a handgun on the “approved” list, you need to apply for an Handgun Qualification License (HQL). The requirements are, you need to get handgun training from an approved instructor, unless you already owned a Maryland State Police (MSP) registered handgun prior to October 1, 2013. An HQL is required to buy another handgun, and go through the 7 day waiting period to receive it. Get livescanned fingerprinting, and submit them to the MSP within 72 hours along with your HQL application. The fingerprinting and application alone cost upwards of $110.00, depending on how much you pay for the fingerprinting, prices vary store to store. The MSP HQL application is $50.00 for seven years, then it has to be renewed, which will be another fee.
The HQL classes I’ve see listed are about $100.00.
I broke down and got my HQL in August. Due to arthritis I gave up my Colt 1911 and bought an S&W 640 pro. So now I’m in the market for a Model 65-3 and or Model 65LS, pre lock models.
Yeah I’d move, but the wife is still working. Hard to give up a great salary at our age, when it all adds up in the end towards savings and ss payments.
