Hey guys & gals,
A guy at work has a 870 that I can pick up pretty dang cheap for a "do-it yourself, paint yer gun, kill a zombie" project. But I'm not very well versed on the 870. Is there a good on-line source for serial #s, DOB, etc? And how do I tell the choke on the barrel, is there a meaning to the stamped symbols like on my A-5?

Thanks
Monty

if it's good mechanically, that is the important thing. unfortunately, if the gun looks bad on the outside it usually looks worse on the inside. that said, any working 870 should bring over $150. parts are available easily.

Call Remington during business hours at 800-243-9700, just tell them the serial number and they will tell you how old it is. The Barrel codes only tell you when the barrel was made and on an 870 chances are it's not the original.

Barrels will also indicate the chambering. The serial number will indicate whether or not magnum loads can be used in the shotgun: an "M" at the end of the serial number.
