It was the summer of 1953; I was 14 and my mom and dad and I were on vacation in Yellowstone National Park.

Fishing in the Yellowstone River was a big thing in the park, and there was an abundance of seasoned fishermen focusing on catching many of the cutthroat trout in the river. The rigs they had were impressive - special fishing rods and spinning reels, wading boots, creels, fishing flies in their hats, etc. I was really taken in with all that they were doing.

My dad asked me if I wanted to do some fishing - "Well, sure, dad!"

We went the economy route. Dad bought me a length of leader line and a Colorado spinner. We cut a branch off a sapling and tied the line to the tip of the branch, and we marched down to the river.

The river was crowded with fishermen, up and down the river as far as I could see. Did I feel outclassed? Sure. Did I feel that I was out of the running? Naw. I felt I could make up for my lack of experience and equipment with sheer enthusiasm and maybe some beginner's luck.

Looking down into a comparatively shallow portion of the river where we approached it, I saw a marvelous sight. A big fish. I took my rigged rig and dropped the Colorado spinner right in front of his nose. It didn't take long. He bit.

What was I do do next? I hollered to my dad that I had hooked a fish - he told me to just drag it out of the water onto the shore! ..and that's what I did.

Dad, my mom and I stood there admiring that big trout on the ground, then flopping around in its death dance.

One of those well-equipped fisherman came splashing out of the water to where we were standing - in his regulation hip boots and with all the trimmings including a well-festooned hat.

"What didja catch it with, kid?" He exclaimed. I held up my rig, and told him "A Colorado spinner!" He then asked "How long ya been fishin' here?" I told him about two minutes.

I never saw someone that annoyed in my life. He threw down his special hat, and exclaimed that he had been fishing there for over two hours and hadn't caught a thing. He also spit out a few special words that my dad sometimes used when things weren't going very right...

To make a long story short, we enjoyed a very special meal of fried trout that evening, and I was a very happy lad. Here's a pic that my dad took of my catch.

That's a heck of a nice fish for first time or any time! My first was a 14" bass in the neighbor's pond up by our camp. I was about 7 or 8. No pictures, though. The camera was for special occasions!

The cutthroat trout I caught measured out at 24 1/2 inches. I remember it well!

Love that story! Sometimes the enthusiam of youth beats the lust of manhood, lol!

I have a similar story. A few years back we were spending the holidays at my mom's farm. We arrived in the evening and had been down to the pond. My son was about 8 at the time and he was dying to fish. As it was almost dark and cold, I promised him we would come down in the morning and fish.

The next morning I got up about 7:00, it was just getting daylight and cold outside. I was sitting it the livivng room drinking coffee and passing the time waiting for my son to wake up. All of a sudden I heard a commotion outside the door. I walked out and there was my boy dragging an ultra-lite pole with a big bass at the other end. He had woke up early, walked down to the pong by himself...barefooted...and caught the monster bass the neighbor had been shooting for a year, lol. My step father was well pleased because this big boy had been eating the recently stocked brim. The neighbor never got over it, lol. In the picture he is wearing my pull over i put on him to keep him from freezing and his mamma from killing us both, his pajama pant leg is rolled up because it's soaking wet from the pond action.

I still have on my dresser a picture of me with my paternal grandfather about 60 years ago. Granddad, my dad and I went trout fishing that day up in Potter County, PA. I caught the brook trout that I'm holding in the picture, and felt really proud because my dad had been telling me how wily trout were.

Caught my first yellowtail on a 3/4 day boat Dinah Lee out of Redondo. Woulda been around '69, maybe '70. It was my first trip on a party boat.

Rod was an old gray painted Roddy that I sanded down & rebuilt. Reel was a 140 Squidder with cheap 15# Penguin line. All my terminal gear fit in my pockets. Deckhands told me I'd never get anything to the boat with 15#. They were wrong. :D

Got an old B & W picture of me at 12 (not my first fish but my first deep sea trip) with two 28+ inch "barries" (barracuda) caught at Horseshoe Kelp off of Palos Verdes. Ironically, my dad did not eat fish although Mom and my brothers did.

And if it's fish stories you want here's one for ya. I was looking for it in my files but I either accidentally dumped it or I never wrote it up in the first place.

It was a great day on the lake. I had my BIL with me in my bass boat and we were in the jungle area on the north end of Lake Conroe. Now I do stuff like this a lot but this time there were a lot of boats on the water and every body got to witness what is probably my most unusual and unlikely catch...ever.

I was throwing a black and silver Devils Horse. That is a stick bait (floater) with 3 treble hooks and a spinner or propeller on both ends. This was always a go to plug for me but it was hard to throw because it was light and just didn't fly well due to it's shape. But if you could get it in front of a bass you better not be pickin' yer nose when he sees it.

The water was still and flat and the area was quiet. Some of the boaters were talking to each other as there was no one catching any fish. I reared back to cast and I had one of my textbook "early releases". That is I raised my thumb off the spool too soon and that Devils Horse went nearly straight up...and over a dead tree limb about 10' or so above the water. It went all the way over and landed in the water directly under the dead limb.

I looked around and sure enough everyone was snickering and and grinning and shaking their heads.

Now as I said I do stuff like this from time to time and I am sometimes able to get a happy ending. I was thinking about what might be the best thing to do. I decided to ease the plug up the the branch and then give it a little pop and get it over the branch without wrapping it around the limb or any of the hooks catching. Sometimes that worked.

Just as I started to crank a really nice large mouth bass hit it. It was one of those heavy bodied Florida type bass. Not a really big one but pretty nice all the same.

Now I have everyone's attention. People are shouting out suggestions and ideas about how to get that fish. I decided to stay with the original plan. As soon as I got him out of the water I was afraid he was going to shake the hook. He was cuttin' up big time. I got him to the branch and paused. He got still. I took a deep breath and gave it a good tug.

The fish went up and over the branch without touching it. It came down and landed at my feet in the bottom of the boat.

Whistles and cheers surrounded me. I stood up and took a bow. a few came boats came by to see the fish up close and shake my hand. My BIL was speechless.

We all have favorite catches that for one reason or other stand out in our memory. That is one of mine.

Great story, I caught my first native river run Dolly Varden at about the same age on Henry's Fork of the Snake not far from where you were. I used a spinning rig and a Mepps spinner, although not a large it was a beautiful fish and hooked me as solid as I did the fish.
A buddy talked me into running down to the Snake below Pullman, Wa to fish for Steelhead, after hooking and loosing a Clearwater Paddletail I caught this nice keeper.
