I was attempting to say that in our home, they are loved and considered members of our family just as much as our children. Of course there are differences...I have had to have several pets put to sleep for inoperable cancers, and obviously that is not something I would do to one of my children. Neither do I ask my children to use the bathroom outside, feed them on the floor, and so on. (Although when they were growing up, my kids did do some of those things...not at our insistence, of course, in fact in spite of our efforts to the contrary.) So, yes, I do acknowledge and recognize that there are differences...but in terms of loving them, and regarding them as living beings deserving of good treatment, in our home they are considered members of our family.
Thanks for the clarification.
I have owned dogs continuously for about 60 years now. I have loved every one of them, including and especially Chipper, the Llewellin Setter in my avatar. I can truthfully say, though, that I have never had a dog I loved "just as much as" I love my child. Nor, for that matter, any other member of my family.
