Rethinking your carry choice in light of the riots.

ContinentalOp is right. Riots don't pop up instantly. What does is mass shootings and multiple crook robberies, and for that you need lots of ammo.

The "protest" in Austin where the US Army sergeant shot the AK-wielding "protester" DID just "pop up." It wasn't permitted, and the sergeant turned right when he saw people in the road in front of him. Suddenly, he has people pounding on his car, and a guy pointing an AK at him. Boom.

Local stuff, the 2 inch S&W Model 12-2 and/or 4 inch S&W Model 65-1 have been more than sufficient. Lately, the degenerative disk disease (L3/L4 & L4/L5 have been making carrying either an exercise in pain management. I changed over to carrying a Ruger LC9s with a 7-round magazine and 1/2 9-round magazines.

Traveling to the big cities, especially those which have had issues, has caused me to add a S&W SD9 w/Hi-Viz Sights and a spare mag to the Ruger which suffices as a backup. A folding stock Ruger Mini-14 is secured in the Jeep with 7 30-round magazines.

GP100, 7 shot. Any suggestions on an IWB? Preferably leather.

One time back in 70s, hot summer night me and wife decided to go fishing down on old dam. We got there about 11pm, it was a Sat night. We only turned light on to bait or take fish off the line. Not a sole around. Along about 2:30am a van came in below us about 50yds. 3 guys who were a little drunk, got out lit up lanterns, had music blaring and got their lines in the water. Wife turned on lite to bait. Soon as they saw her they started with their mouths. I tolerated this for about 3 seconds and I sent their Coleman lantern to space program. Small fires broke out which allowed me to see them hastily leaving the area. Wife was shook up when sheriff came about an hour later and ask me If we herd any shooting in area. He was holding a Mag Lite on my gun & holster hanging on stair railing. I said no and he said call if we hear anything and left. Those idiots had the fuzz to report me to the Law. In today’s world I would have been arrested.

I’m firm believer in Ruger LCP. It is dependable, durable and 380 is enough power to be practical. For non gun persons it is small and lite enough it can be carried with little effort. It’s much better to have on you than a expensive carry that you don’t carry because of weight and bulk. No matter what kind of handgun you have and how good you think you are with it, a punk with a long gun can make things rough on you. Pistol is just to get you away from bad situations.

well I went from a 38 derringer to a 22 mini mag, but I was going to do that anyway. Not too worried, no cell service here so they cant be on their I phones, leaving them with the dts long for they got here. Plus there is not a Starbucks with in 50 miles, and not much worth looting. Oh the horror!

And you should have been.

No, not anticipating changing what I carry. Especially after watching the guy that shot the protester in New Mexico.
These people are cowards. All it took was a couple of shots bringing down one of their buddies and they scrambled like rats from a sinking ship.
Confident that my Model 66 2 1/2” is up to the task.

Revolvers don’t leave empties behind . . . . .

I live ten miles from a small city that has seen some low level protests but no riots or violence. I am more concerned about random unprovoked attacks. So yes, I carry either a Kel Tec PMR 30 if working around the place, or a Colt LW Commander in .38 Super when I go to town.

Can all the guys a gals who carry, give an example of when they un holstered their weapon for any reason?

Any reason? Was driving in a small town when the train stopped me on the wrong side of the tracks. Looking in the mirror, saw a car pull up behind me with the driver looking like it was their stomping grounds. Saw his door open and him get out. Unholstered my weapon. Turned out he was just looking at something on his car.

7 round pocket rocket to G19x. Was planning on a G48 but now I have options up to 33 rounds.

While a SW enthusiast!! Have to admit that I moved from a Performance Center Shield 9 to a Glock 43x and spare mag. More fire power and just as thin to carry. I figure if I need more than 21 rounds to stop a threat, ***!

lately I have gone from my usual 6+1 or 7+1 9mm semi pocket carry to a 12+1 9mm or a 13+1 40s&w/357 Sig... no real reason, no perceived threat increase in my daily life... just a general "why not" upgrade... they may eventually "feel" heavy and I will go back to the usual rotation... variety is the spice of life...

I think that's how I started with carrying my PX4 Compact. I'd carried a snub for several years and wanted to try it out as a carry option. I didn't really intend for it to become my EDC, but it did.

Any time I think I have to be in a dangerous area I have three ten round magainzes and my Glock 45 caliber SF 30, and a backup S&W 642 38 special. I would avoid any place I thought there might be a riot, but if
there is one before I am pulled out of a vehicle my guns will be smoking and empty.

It's a real bad time in our country. Violence can strike in an instant, anywhere, don't fool yourself. There's plenty of choices out there.

A Poly 9mm is perfect. If you're a Glock fan, carry some sort of hi cap Glock 9MM. If you're a S&W fan, some sort of M&P9 hi cap. There's tons of other poly 9s out there that fit the bill. Ruger, Sig, etc. Cheap insurance to keep on you or in your car/home. And when the crisis is over (Nov 4th), you can't put it away and resume carrying a smaller handgun.

I gotta say, a Canik TP9SF really works. Inexpensive, LOTS of rounds, accurate and shoots great. Extra mags at $20-25. If I had a limited budget, I'd use one of those.

Lucky for me, for the last 2 years, when guns and ammo prices were low, I bought. Buy 'em cheap and stack 'em deep!
