We had one installed at our last Long Island home. It was from a local company.
Can't think of a single negative to the ownership of one. We had a large sun- drenched south-facing patio which got too hot during the day.
That pretty fabric cover made it a lovely private oasis.

Depending on what you want to spend I put this on the front of the house. It comes from Japan, impact resistant panels that provide UV protection but as you can see it is a fixture.

I am in north Texas and it has weathered high winds, tornado warnings and hail that took out the roof. It is a product handled by local dealers so you would have to see if there was one near you…..I have to look up the product name.

If you’re looking for shade do some testing on how the position of the sun affects placement of the awning. It may not go where you think it should.
Where’s the furniture, grill, etc.
It’s not 12 noon all day long. Been there, done that.

Sunsetter Awnings are nice to use. They have optional sizes and you can get electric or hand operated, automatic retractors that sense the wind, colors & designs are pretty endless. And they are expensive. I put an 8 x 10 ft. one above the French doors above that side of the deck, so 8 of 23 feet of deck get shade. They offer an optional curtain which I should've sprung for, for later afternoon sun. That 23 x 12' space is the same as my deck. I didn't want to cover the whole thing. Big drawback is the wind. You can impress your friends with the remote-controller awnings come with as an option, too. Good luck!

Had a sunsetter on our large second floor deck years ago ( late 90’s). Manual type as don’t recall an electric version, was outstanding.

Got an electric Sunsetter last year. Gets awful hot under it until the sun sets, unless there's a good breeze, when the suggest that you roll it up.

thanks to all that have posted.
i have Distributers from both companies coming to look at my wants/needs that i mentioned in my original post.
