Revolver Carry and Reloads

Our local PD and Sheriff's Office don't carry revolvers anymore. I'm the last revolver toter left in my agency. Once I retire next year, that's it.

BTW I said "same brand and type cartridge". They do make
the same brand and type cartridges for revolvers as well as
semi-autos.

I occasionally carry a coonan classic in 357 magnum, and an extra mag, all loaded with 357 magnum. The security six is loaded with 357 and the speedloaders are as well.

Lately I've been carrying my Chiappa Rhino quite a bit with two speed strips loaded with 357 Hornady 158gr Critical Defense.

All the revolvers I carry are .357 Magnum.

I have been known to carry .38 +P or +P_loads in my short 2 1/2" and 2 3/4"barrel revolvers due to the shorter ejector rod, but my reloads are all .357 Magnum.

However, since I usually carry a Model 686+, a Model 66 or a Speed Six, it brings two separate speed loaders into the mix. Consequently, double checking to ensure I have a 7 shot speed loader to match the 7 shot L frame 686+, or a six shot speed loader to match a six shot K frame or Six series revolver is important.

My pocket carry revolver is a S&W 640 J frame .357 loaded with 5 rounds of 125 gr FTX Hornady Critical Defense. I keep a speedloader loaded with the same. With consistancy in ammo selection there is no confusion...

I will say that, in my particular circumstances, I rarely feel the need to carry the speedloader with me, but since that little J frame often does double duty as a nightstand gun I feel far more likely to want the speedloader available to me in a nighttime home invasion/home defense situation than I might during the middle of the afternoon while loading groceries in a supermarket parking lot. Different needs for different circumstances.

I usually load carry wheel guns with 145 grain Silvertips, but woods/outdoor carry ammo is a .357 handload using 158 grain XTPs and a healthy dose of 2400. Reloads carry the same ammo as the gun.

What kind of speed loader is that? I must say I have seen no shortage of loading setups but that one is new to me.

It's a re-heat of the Quick Load, designed by Donald Matich and patented in October 1965. This new take on the concept uses a different latch to hold it rolled up, but the concept and operation is the same.

The plus side of these is that they load flat and are thin enough that they don't generally interfere with the grips.

On the negative side, they are very dependent on user technique. Get too excited and the cylinder will spin like a top, and if you really over do it, under extreme stress, there is the potential to tilt the revolver, pull in an other than perpendicular direction and pull the last round or two out of the cylinder.

There's a reason they never caught on in law enforcement.

In the few times I've carried a .357 Mag revolver for bipedal self-defense, it was always loaded with the FBI load. I've never used .357 Mag rounds for bipedal self-defense.
