So I bit the bullet and bought a 1006. I paid more than I wanted to but I've been after one for years and I just never see them locally. I picked up my 1066 in a local gun shop 4 years ago for $950, which I thought was crazy at the time. I justified that purchase by the low production numbers. But the 1006 was always in the back of my mind.

Anyway, this one is in 95%+ condition and came with two mags so it stings a little less. That and the fact that there are never going to be any new ones so. Here she is below….

All things considered I think that you did alright.

Clean ones like yours are generally going for over a grand now. Besides that they are great pistols. I have two of them that I got really good deals on. They are not going anywhere anytime soon.

1006

I think based on what can be seen, or can`t maybe , that you`re underestimating at 95%. Good buy !

Nice! You got the 1st 2 out of 6, it is the last 2 of those 6 that are tricky (read: spendy)...

You did good!
And with adjustable rear sight.

Yep. I was looking for an adjustable sight model specifically. I think it looks better on the full size guns but from what I've read it seems a lot of people disagree with that.

Especially with a cartridge like 10mm, which can vary wildly in bullet weight and velocity, I think being able to tweak the sights to get it on target is a real bonus.

Yea I think the rest of the models except for the 1076 are likely out of my pay grade. It took a lot for me to go over that $1000 mark for this one, but I'm definitely glad to have it. It will never leave my hands now, one more of these great pistols off of the market. I am surprised at how many of them are floating around online though. They're 30-33 years old at this point but I think the word has gotten out and everyone that wants to sell is attempting to cash in on them.

Not everyone likes the adjustable sight on the 1006…several years ago, a forum member had this to say specifically referring to the 1006's adj sight:

"The adjustable sight is ugly beyond description. The guy who designed it and his boss that approved his design and set it in motion both need their eyes and their heads checked.

Every other adjustable rear sight that S&W ever made on any model or style of handgun in their long, rich history is better looking than the adjustable abomination they vomited on to the top of some 2nd & 3rd Gen pistols."

I got a good laugh out of it and I'm wondering if he'll remember it.

I've had two 1006's, both with the adjustable sight. It didn't bother me, but I've since traded or sold both and now I have a 1026 and a 1076. I have to admit the non adjustable sights are sexier looking.

You got a terrific score...I am jealous. One of the very few examples of 3rd gens I am missing from my collection and have yet to see.

I just sold the same for $1150 with two mags, not a blemish on the gun.

I see the prices down a bit, maybe because of the proliferation of polymer and 1911 10's.

Still have a 1066, 1076 and 1086.

Now get out there and get some extra mags...

I've got 4 now between the two guns. Unless I run across some for a steal, that's all I'm ever going to have. I'd never pay $100 for one.

I will buy new white followers and baseplates from Midway to rebuild these two I just got though. They have the pre-recall yellow followers.

Fully agree that the adjustable sight is the way to go on the 1006.

Both of mine have it and it looks just fine and is really what you need for a gun like that.

Nice find!!, and good that you got 2 mags. Congrats.

I once had a 1006 with the adjustable rear sight...somebody wanted it so bad that he offered a deal i couldn't refuse. It has since been replaced with a pair of 1006s with Novak sights that do look cleaner, but in this stage of the game a good deal on either style is scarce, same goes for cheap mags.

And spare 10XX-series mags, if you can even find them, are going for north of $100, especially if they have the upgraded "tactical" white followers. ;)

Last 10mm mags i saw sold on ebay for about 200 ea as i recall

That's insanity. I would never pay that for one. I wouldn't even pay $100

Well, I tend to agree. However, if you got a deal on a gun that sells for well over 1 Grover Cleveland and it didn't have a mag or only had 1 mag, it might be a worthwhile investment to pay that much.

My 1006 had a bent extractor. It worked fine with a shim, but a new one was going to cost over $40. I had serious heartburn about paying that much for an extractor, but finally realized because of the value of the gun, the extractor was worth the investment.

Rosewood

Great score! Any of the 10XX are cool to have. Hunting for reasonably priced mags is half the fun. Luckily, they all take the same mags. :D

I am content with my 1006 and 1076, my favorite of the 10XX.

P.S. I prefer the fixed rear sight over the adjustable. ;)

I love my Ten Ought Six. I was lucky to have received five spare mags with the gun when I bought it back in 2017. I did upgrade each mag to the white followers and installed new Wolff springs in each one. It's crazy what some magazines go for these days. It's one thing when we are talking high condition, original mags for guns that are 75 or even 100 years old but for guns that are only out of production for a couple of decades ?

But the market sets the prices and they go up more every year. Obligatory photo.

Check out recent eBay sales 1006/1076 mags last 90 days - Lots of movement in 2's and 3's: Incredible sale prices.

Average price 13 sales $185 ea plus shipping and tax.

Low 140 ea ++

High 247 ea ++

Yea I've seen them on there. Only ever looked once and instantly left the page.

Here in PA there are little mom and pop gun shops scattered all over the countryside. I could make my rounds and find some for way way less than that I'm sure.

I remember years ago paying around $100 for a Steyr GB magazine thinking that was crazy. The S&W 10mm magazines have surpassed those.

A few years ago when the parts were still available I assembled and sold on Ebay the S&W 10mm magazines for $70 - in the end I made maybe $5 each profit. Unfortunately I only kept two extras for myself before the tubes sold out!
