I have ordered the tools from Brownells to chamfer the barrel on my S&W 617 .22.

I just want to knock off the inside edge of the barrel.

Can anyone tell me how deep the chamfer should be?

Thanks!

Thanks, but a gauge does no good if I don't know what the dimension should be.

It doesn't take much to get the right chamfer. After a few turns you should use the gauge to see if you did it enough.

I assume the guage has numbers on it. How do I find the correct dimension?

The gage has steps cut in it . Minimum and maximum .
You want to be in between.

As I read it, the OP is not re-cutting the forcing cone. He just wants to remove the sharp edge at the beginning of the forcing cone, like chamfering the chambers. OP, gauges will do you no good. All you need to do is break the edge, a couple turns of the cutter with moderate pressure should do it.

Received my order today. The Range Rod gauge that Brownells sells is for a .223 even though it says 22lr. It Measures .215. My barrel is .211. The chamfer gauge is also too big for the .211 barrel.

I have run into this issues before. If you have the handle it attaches to the Range Rod Head you need is Brownells Part Number 080-618-213. This is a Range Rod specifically for S&W 22lr revolvers.
