I need a higher front sight for my Smith 69. Will any Smith ramp front work? What size punch to knock out that tiny pin? Should I drive the pin left to right, or right to left?
thanks

First owner I've heard of that needs a different front sight size on a 69. Usually the rear sight elevation adjustment does the job. Thinking a .05 cupped is the punch you need and left to right direction.

Yeah, I'm bottomed out, and its shooting about 4.5" high at 20 yds Load is 10grs Unique and a 255 SWC HP

Dawson precision will make you the right height to order. Use their calculator to figure it out.

Are you sure you need a pin? Pull back on the front sight. If it moves it's a DX style sight = pull back and up on the front of the front sight and it comes out.

Yeah its a pinned front sight on the 69.

I'm also surprised you ran out of adjustment. Mine is hitting right on at 25 yards with about the same load... 10 grains of Unique and a 240 grain SWC. I still have plenty of adjustment left.

Seems to me I remember some comments about the first run of 69's having an incorrect blade in the rear sight and Smith was replacing them.

She sure does shoot good, but way too high. I'll replace with a solid black one, if i can.

Measure your rear sight blade height and post up here. Someone with a 69 that hits on target such as stykshooter can then measure theirs and see if you have the wrong rear blade installed from the factory. Changing a rear sight blade is much, much easier than messing with the front blade.

Mine shoots a little high too. Not enough to be a problem but it does what it does. I would change mine for a gold bead if I could get the urge real bad.

I just measured my blade with calipers.... Rear sight blade from top to bottom... 0.165"
Notch in rear sight blade... 0.084"

Rear sight blades are available in .126, .146 in blue or white outline from Brownells.
They are packaged with the screw and nut.
Watch out for that little detent and spring in the screw !
