S&W M659

Need info on newly acquired M659. Ser# TAR 91xx. What does TAR? Target, mebbee? And what year of manufacture? Sometime in the '80s I DO know. Thanks.

TAR is just part of the serial number. ATFE required all firearms builders to adopt an alpha/numeric SN code as the old system of all numerics was used up and many builders used the same SN for different models in their lineup. Using alpha also greatly expands the numbers available.

Well, they started the TAA series of SN's in 1984, so it's later than that, but the SCSW doesn't provide any more detail than that.

S&W will give you a better date but your 659 was probably shipped in either 1984 or 1985. They are great pistols, enjoy it.
