Searched Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson and did not see ACU as part of the serial number. This pistol is ACU17XX (yoke and grip frame). Has partridge front sight. Yoke also has MOD 586. Also looks like C1 and E7888

586 belongs to neighbor whose husband passed. Trying to identify year of production (1981 - 1986) and value ($1,000.00)?

If you happen to have the original box, it's worth more and the end label can tell us a born-on date. If you don't, there is likely a date inside the right side stock, but you have to remove the stocks to see it. That isn't an exact date, but it can hint.

If you do have the original box, $1,000 is in the ballpark.

Right grip has black ink marks but not legible. However, the frame on the left side has the E7888, an 81 and under the 81 a 12.

I have a 586-1 that I bought in 1985. Serial number is AUUxxxx. It is 37 years old and has NEVER had a magnum round fired through it. I had a trigger job done (2.2lbs and amazingly crisp) and have used it for those 37 years for bullseye competition. The bluing is as good as the day I bought it (save some wear at the muzzle end). I recently bought a 686-6 to switch on and off in competitions. It too has a crisp 2.5lb. trigger and is as accurate as the 586. For timed and rapid-fire stages I shoot double action (very smooth and not gritty at all) b/c the fingers don't work so well anymore. These are two guns that will be in my collection forever and be passed down to my son, who luckily is also a shooter. BTW, I have the box for the 586 and every other gun I own.

More like $1200 with that target front sight which is rare.

Interesting. Of the early 6-inch 586s I saw, ALL of them had a Patridge blade. It was a couple of years before I saw one with a red ramp. I traded my gun with the Patridge blade for the first one I found, and immediately regretted it. The angle of the red ramp was so shallow that the sight picture it presented was distracting and not at all to my liking. The "be careful what you ask for" principle had gotten me again. :D

I have no idea what that 586 is worth but it looks very nice. :)

I think that you are confusing this with the four-position front sight that was used on silhouette models and those used for PPC. The gun shown is simply equipped with a Patridge front sight. While more desirable for some, it would not impact the value. $1K is certainly in the ballpark, although value is also dependent on your location.

Adios,
