Do not post much, but always searching for information & learning. My question is can I shoot 38 special +P ammo on a somewhat consistent basis with the Model 10-10. I read all sort of info that it is ok, but not consistently or it can wear down the barrel etc. I just purchased this used last week and will be shooting it this week. I have a box of +P's I will be taking along. Went through the gun this weekend dissembling and reassembling & it appears in very good shape. I'm not sure this has been posted before, but would like some expert opinions. Thanks.

It is perfectly fine with any factory +P ammo. My usual statement is you will run out of money buying it before you'll wear out a modern K frame .38. Enjoy!

Thanks. I will be taking it to the range tomorrow. Can't wait. Thanks for reassuring me that it is ok to shoot the +P's. Feel a little better about that. The gun sure cleaned up nice. Did a little bluing touch up & polished the grips. It looks pretty good. It is one of Bud's Gun Shop deals. I have been pretty lucky with purchases from them.

ceci, if the gun has/had a round VPA sticker on it, it came from Australia. I got a 10-8 from them myself. In no way, am I unhappy with it. I also have been happy with everything from Bud's. Enjoy it! Bob

Thanks Murphydog,Idp4570. Shot a box of 38 spl. ( 50 rds) & 25 38+P's Tuesday morning. The handgun was amazingly accurate. Took a couple of rounds to find point of aim. After that it was a fun morning.
Bananaman, yes it has a round VPA sticker on it.Thanks for the info. I did some touch up bluing on it, and it really looks very good. I also am very happy with it & Bud's. This was my 3rd purchase from them. Thanks again to everyone.

not too many people regularly shoot plus p and there is very little reason to do so. yes shooting a box to know where they hit, carrying 6 plus a reload or two and rotating ammo on whatever schedule makes you feel good (monthly yearly whatever) shooting up the "old" ammo at that point is all the plus p you would need to shoot.
I suspect a modern smith like your 10-10 would shoot tens of thousands of plus p before any accumulated wear would cause problems, but beating up the gun and shooter with significant numbers of plus p has absolutely no benefit I can think of.

Again, like others have said you will likely not wear out your 10-10 shooting +Ps. I have a 10-14 and shoot +Ps at least three to four times a year at the range. This includes my home defense round Buffalo bores 158 gr LSWCHP +P. This round has a reported velocity of 1100 fps. I show no adnormal wear on the revolver. This are sturdy 38 specials.

Howard

Are you serious? +P is like 1000fps vs. 900fps in other loads. It's not exactly a hot loading and the 10-8 or the 10-10 with the heavy barrel is built like a tank. If you switched cylinders, you would have a Model 13 and could shoot .357s out of the thing. It's a tank. And now someone else will come along and tell me why I'm wrong. ;)

Also, I never felt any pain from firing +P loads, even from a 642. Some of the Magnums with wood grips will hurt my hand, but not +P.

Thanks again everyone for the reassuring comments. I felt a little more recoil shooting the P's, but nothing an experienced shooter would fine uncomfortable. The handgun handled the loads very well. Would not hesitate to shoot them again, but not on a regular basis.

Old S&W catalogs used to list appropriate ammo for each gun in each listing. Just saw one from the late 40s/early 50s and recommendation for the .38 Military & Police included the .38 Special High Speed, which is what the .38-44 was being called at the time. Seems to me you can shoot whatever .38 Spl ammo you like from the K-frame .38s.
