S&W Model 52-2, failure to fire quite often.

With the slide off, lay it on flat surface sight down, safety off, push firing pin in, it should move freely. Push in ejector depressor plunger, this should move with no hang ups / grinding. Hold ejector depressor plunger in and push pin in still should move freely.

Taking the slide off now. Last night, sight facing down, the firing pin moved freely. Need to figure out which the "ejector depressor plunger" is......

Hold on.....

Where would the "ejector depresses plunger" be? I see a tiny hole with nothing seemingly in it - is that it?

Found it - not sure how far you want me to press it in, but pushed in quite a bit, the firing pin is still free to move in/out.

How far did you want me to push it in? It goes quite a ways, with no effect on the firing pin smoothness.

What I'm referring to is very repeatable. With the slide off the gun, and with the slide mounted to the gun, but with no magazine, the firing pin moves freely. As soon as I load an empty magazine, the firing pin is back to moving very "roughly", as if it's dragging on something that is trying to block it.

I have tried two different magazines.

Can I simply remove the "magazine disconnect" ? That would solve the problem, and for a target gun, there would be no issues.

Don, comparing the magazine from this gun with a like-new magazine, they are durn similar, but not identical. I think the next step should be to try the gun with a new magazine.

The "ridges" that go up into the gun look like the one from this gun might be bent in slightly more, but it's so hard to tell. It will never show up in a photo.

I'll be at the range tomorrow morning - will let you know how this turns out.

Can you get a pic similar angle to this?

Yes in place, seems much stronger, and I had to use the "tie strip trick" to get it back on the gun. All set.

No, just not very good lighting.....

So if you took a toothpick or something similar and put it where the red dot is, it wouldn't go into the plunger hole along side?
Looks strange.

Yes, I can't really see it, but with a paper clip, I found there is a small hole.

I will try to get a better photo....

Looking at Mikes photo in post 170 it appears there is a hairline crack left of the firing pin that runs to the end of the slide. I may be seeing things that aren't really there tho.

I got better lighting, and put my smartphone right over it.

Hope this helps.

Is this good news, or a problem, or ????
What does it mean?

The ejector IS the magazine disconnect, hard to get along without that.
You could remove the ejector depressor plunger from the slide - access under the rear sight, but I tinkered with mine a good deal and cannot find an interaction between the ejector or plunger and the firing pin. But then mine shoots.

Well, that hole should not be there. Looks like someone went crazy trying to ream that out. The plunger is probably getting pushed into the firing pin spring hanging it up. That's not good. removing the plunger is an option. You will have to tap the sight over enough to expose the hole. Slowly. Be aware there is a spring there with the plunger. This will also render the ability to fire only with the mag inserted gone.
