Sad manufacturing

WOW! That is some rough machining! It really does look like they are threaded.
Are the throats the correct size, despite being so rough?
Do they lead up?
Looks like a replacement cylinder is definitely in order.

I have not measured it

I have only shot 5 rounds through it. After that I noticed the jacked up throating. It did seem to shoot accurate enough. Granted 2 shots of the 5 were way off target due to the sights being lazily installed.

Its annoying as I am excited for this gun. Just looks like rushed work. The barrel and rest of the cylinders look good though. Trigger feels great and everything seems right. I mean except for the super rough throats on those two chambers and the sights :(

But yes its going back. I want this gun to be right so I can enjoy it. I do think they put out a nice product most of the time. But I sure have ran across a handful of warranty issues owning them too

Hmmn, 2 out of 5 were way off target. Wonder if they were also the ones fired out of the rough chambers...

Nope

To be clear I was shooting at a coke can at about 7 yards or so.

I knew going in the sights looked all sorts of wonky with one leaning to the left and the other to the right. I held dead on for the first two shots just to ensure they would hit where I thought they would. Indeed the shots went right.

I held a coke can or so left for the last 3 and smashed the can in the center.

I think largely the gun could shoot fine even as is. But I worry about lead building up in the grooves that are present and being a problem down the road. It felt pretty easy to smack that can once I adjusted my hold.

I went home and adjusted the sights. Boy they are really in that dovetail and it took quite some force to move them. Ive got them mostly straight now. I think the front is hanging just a tiny bit left currently.

I then noticed the rough throats and Im gunna leave the rest for smith to fix. Including getting the sights straight as they are not 100% there just yet.

Im waiting for a call tag as I type this and have had one message back from them from my initial inquiry yesterday

I did take a bullet and see how it felt in the throats. It felt about the same all around even with the rough ones. I could certainly feel the rough ones slightly more but they seemed about the same diameters. I think the high spots are likely the dimension its suppose to be with the low points being cut too far. Perhaps a reamer broke or picked up some metal cutting the thread like pattern?

I think Im likely in for a new cylinder on this gun

Yeah, me too.
If the diameter of those throats were tight - meaning the grooves were the right diameter - then it would probably be easily repairable. As is, it sounds like replacement is the only realistic option.
Are they still putting the serial numbers on the cylinder?
If so, then I wouldn't be surprised if they just replace the whole gun - rather than go through the rework process to fit and serialize a new cylinder.
Hope it all works out well for you one way or another.

There is a number under the star but it doesnt seem to correlate to the serial on the frame

Im sure they will take care of me just slightly frustrating. I know itll be a good month or two before its back. But it is what it be.

I do have plenty of other good smith revolvers to shoot and carry until it comes back which is something I should be grateful for.

Back to smith

Threw a little something in there thatll hopefully help it turn around quick lol

Hopefully i that works out better for you than sending patches did for me. My 642UC showed up at S&W on April 29th, they opened it on May 2nd, and just shipped it June 17th.

Unless they were waiting on more front sights from XS, my repair was all of a 5 minute job.

You Don't Have To Convince Me

When I first began my LE career, I was issued a series of M & P 45 full size pistols.

ALL trash. Entire agency was replaced multiple times.

I had to bet my life on that thing. That was scary. When you drew it, you prayed it would work if you needed it to.

Thankfully we transitioned to Glocks.

That's a company that knows QC.

I bought a New Smith and Wesson Revolver last year. A .44 Magnum. After about 25 rounds the Cylinder bound up hard. After considerable difficulty I was able to get the Cylinder open and unloaded. Smith and Wesson Customer Service, to thier credit was very helpful. Turns out the forcing cone was out of spec and binding and had to be cut down. The Cylinder and Crane were also damaged and had to be replaced.
I also had the Master Revolver Action Package done to improve the trigger.
Disappointing and no new gun for a while but they did fix it. It's now a nice revolver.
I have many Colts, old and new and not one has ever had to be returned.
