Scope Recommendations

Hello everyone. I've recently gotten back into target shooting after a 40 year hiatus. I'm shooting a 629 Performance Center Hunter Comp. Since I'm farsighted, I have to wear my glasses to be able to focus on the front and rear sights of the handgun, but when I wear them, I cannot clearly focus on the target at the same time. I'm thinking a scope would solve my problem. I'd like to keep the cost under about $250 if possible and would appreciate any recommendations you knowledgeable folks might have. Thanks so much.

I put a Nikon 2X pistol scope on my revolver and really like it. You probably don't need to look at something with more magnification than 2X for a couple of reasons: 1. The limited shooting distance of a revolver (usually 50 yds or less) so more power just isn't necessary. 2. higher magnification does little more than make any unsteadiness or shaking while shooting just that much harder to deal with.

Since you have a 44 buy a good one with a lifetime warranty because you are going to need it.

The Leopold 2x is a good scope. An Ultradot 30mm makes for a good dot sight for anything out to 100 yds. Both have excellent reputations for durability.

Yep, a good 2x scope will work well. I like Leupolds myself. BUT, you are a good candidate for a red dot sight. If most of your shooting is about 75 yards and under, they are a great choice. Scopes with magnification can take a little getting used to on a handgun. A red dot with no magnification, or serious parallax, is right there when you snap the gun to your eye.

My eyesight has also gone the way of the bifocal, and lately in particular, I have been equipping my field handguns with tube / holo type red dots. Big difference.

Ultra Dots (about $175) are good reliable tube type sights, as are Aimpoints, at two or three times the price. I have also had good luck with Burris Fastfire and Leupold Delta holographic sights.

I have a Leupold on my 200 yd 460 xvr and it has held up great through the beating that gun's recoil gives it.

Ultradot Matchdot II handles everything I need a revolver to do.
The matches are all shot at everything from 10 to 50 yards, switching between stages, so the click adjustable elevation knob is a must have.
Thinking about silhouettes out to 100 meters. There a Leupold with the target turrets would likely be the answer.
Just go for quality the first time around.

Thanks to all of you for the recommendations. Looks like I have some research to do. Right now I am leaning towards the Ultradot Matchdot II, but I will have to do some more reading about it before making a final decision.

With a 44 magnum you could do well at 100 yards, off a bench rest. My 45 Colt Bisley can shoot 2" to 4" groups at that distance, rested on bags and with the right loads. I use a 2X Leupold handgun scope that I had laying around. I think that with a 4X scope, that gun could shoot even better.
My gun/scope combo is heavy, I am old, and I would not expect much if I were shooting it without some kind of support.

Is there any magnification at all with a Red Dot sight, or does it strictly add a red dot to my view of the target? I'm starting to worry that my farsightedness will prevent me from seeing the target clearly if it is not magnified at all.

There is no magnification with a red dot, but there are a few of the tube type that have + lenses that can be added to enlarge the image.

I have used the Pride Fowler .44 magnum handgun scope on my S&W 629 LH, S&W 629 classic and Desert Eagle with good results. Although it is calibrated for 240 grain bullets at 1400 fps, with the scope markings it is not that hard to determine the hold for different ammunition.

Oops yes it seems to have been discontinued. I find it a very good scope on my 629 classic, 629 LH and my DE .44 magnum. I do not know why it was discontinued, but does appear to have been. My apology.

What range will you be shooting ?

I'll be shooting from a bench rest mainly 25 and 50 yds, but I would like to try out to 100 yds. I'm going to look into that PF scope that you recommended. Maybe the company has a new version that is similar to the one you recommended. Thank you for the information.

Thanks, everyone, for all the recommendations and useful information. I decided to go ahead and order this Weaver Classic Handgun Scope in silver. I spent some time this evening looking at a few red dot sights that a friend owned, and I felt I needed a little magnification of the target, so I opted for this scope in the 2.5-8 x28. I'll know in a couple of weeks if I made a good choice or not.
