SD9 going back to S&W

The firing pin broke in my SD9 after about 200 rounds yesterday.I contacted S&W today to get it returned for repair.Maybe the pin was only defective because the gun is only a little over 4 months old.I hope that once it is fixed it is more reliable than this.I really like the gun but it is hard to have confidence in one that needs repair this early.Has anyone had any problems with the SD9 or the SD40?

i just put 200 rounds threw my sd9 yesterday and it went flawless course mines only a couple weeks old too but anyway best of luck to you!!

Out of every production line comes a few bad ones. QC eliminates as many as possible, but a few slip by. Usually, latent problems are exposed quickly, hence the reason a lot of people recommend 500 rounds before trusting it for self defense.

About 2300 trouble free rounds through my SD40 and about 700 through my SD9, would be more but I've been away from shooting for the last few months because of travel for work. I'm guessing just a bad striker. I wouldn't sweat it.

I put (so far) 200 rounds through my SD40, and not only is all good, it's getting better. The trigger pull is smoothing out and it still breaks clean, so I'm getting really good accuracy. I think once you get it back and fire another 200 rounds through your nine, you will be happy (if) you kept it.

i put 75 rounds throw my sd9 ( jammed about 6 times , took the mag out tapped it back a few times to make sure the bullets were lined up ,and my sights where way off , i thought it was me but my friend shot it to and was hitting the same spots i was , ) got the sights fixed the guy showed me how to set them if there still off but haven't gone back since , other then that gun is fine i love it

I sent the SD9 back to S&W on 4-29-11 and it was returned today 5-16-11.There was no letter detailing the repair on the gun.I called customer service and was informed that the firing assembly was replaced and the trigger adjusted and the gun was fired to verify repairs.The trigger feels the same (very gritty during reset).I was hopeing that this would be improved since it was going back because of a broken firing pin anyway.I look foward to firing some rounds this weekend to verify reliability if the weather permits.

I sent my SD9 in last week for a couple issues, my tritium insert was sliding out and when you look at the muzzle the slide is leaning way to one side making it uneven. We will see how long it takes for them to fix! I hope yours works well.

Other that that, the pistol functions great and I like it.

Unfortunately, replacing the striker assembly won't affect the long trigger pull or "gritty" feeling in the SD.

Continued dry firing -- with a snap cap to preclude a broken striker -- will, however, make it smoother. In addition, a gentle stoning or smoothing of the top surface of the two "bumps" on the trigger bar assembly (the forward one activates the striker safety while the one to the rear is pushed down by a hump in a grove in the slide that depresses the bar and allows reset) will make the SD smoother, too.

Overall, my SD9 and SD40 got much smoother as the round count went upwards of 300-400 rounds. Both guns are excellent and now rate as my favorites (even compared to M&Ps and Sig-Sauers).

The problem alluded to probably is a misaligned dust cover (not a slide that is leaning). This is pretty common from what I can tell (reading web posts, and noting that it appears in the 360 degree photos on the S&W web page!). It really bothers some owners, and there have been several posts about people returning SDs to S&W because of it -- although the response from S&W (famous for its great customer service) is that it is within spec and nothing is to be done about it.

Both my SDs have this condition to some extent. It is harmless to the operation of the gun, and as I rarely look at the business end of the barrel, I hardly ever notice it. Someone recently posted comments on heating up the dustcover and then moving it to a straighter alignment -- although I think this is risky. I have tried gently putting pressure on the dust cover (at room temperature) to move it into a straighter alignment, and it seems closer to what it should be.

Overall, not a functional problem, although I can see why it bugs some folks. S&W should probably put a greater effort into getting this cosmetic detail right.

You were right, they fixed the sight and didnt even adress the slide to frame fit at the muzzle area. Although I do think they smoothed the trigger a bit as it is even sweeter. I sent the pistol on monday may 9th and got it back abut an hour ago. That means it was only at S&W for a week, talk about speedy and good service. I own 7 S&W's now and probably have had around 12 models over all, and this has been the only issue I have had on a S&W firearm! Great company and great service!!
