Hi all,

Just joined, just wanted to share this 439 that I just picked up and am loving. I live in a banned state so the low mag cap doesn't bother me. The trigger is okay but not bad, love the sights. Very fun shooter! Currently bidding on a 3913TSW...super excited if I win that.. I will share it here if I do. One of the pics are the first rounds I shot. It's the first used gun (and S&W) I ever bought, happy there are no issues with it.

Anyway, happy to join. First time posting and sharing images here so sorry if it comes out messy.. not used to this site. And apologies if this is the wrong place to post.

That’s a really nice 439.

The short extractor, (change/fix it in the field specification,) makes it an earlier one. Took me a while to even realize my 439 had one too and then I learned about them here.

Nice pistol! Welcome to the Forums.

I picked up this 539 a while back and have yet to shoot it! It came from an estate sale and the previous/original owner never pulled the trigger on it either.

Welcome to the S&W Forums. I have a blued 439 too, but mine has the fixed rear sight. Mine has been 100% reliable and combat accurate.

Thanks all appreciate the appraisal and warm welcome.. cool to see people from all over.. I'm from new yorkistan myself. Wish there was a way I can easy way to multi quote people but not sure how, or I would reply to all.. I'll try to figure it out, for now:

@mauser9- Thanks man, same I like the wings, part of why I got it. Also the bluing. I was watching that Jerry Miculek video with the Mexican S&W stainless steel 5906 with bluing.. that is a grail piece.

@URIT- Thanks, some my best friends just moved out to Greensboro area, very nice place.. don't worry they're cool, they won't **** it up :)

@DR505- Oh man that's exciting, you will love it. Was really surprised how accurate it is, the it somehow outshoots my Beretta 92x compact (that has pricy LTT and WC parts).

@Jeppo- Yeah way ahead brother, def gotta upgrade the old locker.

@4T5GUY- Thanks for clarifying the extractor. I read they improved it but wasn't sure if the long one was improved or square. I will say, put about 300 shots down the tube so far between 2 sessions and had no extraction issues.

Welcome to the forum,
My first SW 9mm was a model 459 that I bought new around 1985, it also had the short fat extractor that briefly appeared in that timeframe.
Story I heard IIRC was it was changed briefly to submit for some sorta military trials but didn't make it so the extractor went back to the long thin "improved version" from 1970

The short extractor was developed per request by the U.S. Army during the M9 pistol trials. S&W made a whole lot of x39/x59 slides with the short extractor and when the army selected the Beretta 92, the short extractor slides went onto pistols for the civilian and possibly law enforcement markets. S&W was not in the habit of wasting things.

Very interesting thanks for that. I find it difficult tracking the history of these from what's online (although I guess there really isn't all that much to report, these were modern production guns relatively speaking.)

To make it clear I'm a millenial, no reason to disclose this but for context, just wanted to say browsing this site and from the responses in this thread, this feels like a high IQ place.. reminds me of the old internet lol.. which is refreshing compared to some other sites. Love the old school forum vibes.

BTW- I just won a a bid for a 3913TSW, super stoked. Will post when in hand in a few days..
