Shooting in the desert

Never saw anybody out there, but someone was going out all over the desert and shooting a lot of milsurp ammo, keeping a low profile in the process. Wonder who and why?

Errm, somebody else who wanted to get away from the rest of the herd and liked cheap ammo? I see nothing that sinister in what you found, it describes many shooters I know.

Just outside the Las Vegas city limit is a vast desert. This is BLM land and it is legal to carry and shoot weapons. I'm in there with a friend and some firearms about once a week.
We see jack rabbits quite often but we do not shoot at them.
We have stashed 2 folding chairs and some targets for our shooting pleasure. It's a blast!

You say "just outside". Are you sure you are outside enough? Target Shooting and Hunting

I live in the Mojave desert and have spent many an hour shooting out there. You do have to be careful because you never know who you'll meet.

I always take my targets with me when I go and back home when I leave. It really bothers me that some are just pigs.

In the end, I prefer my local range. Good facility and much safer than the desert. I can't shoot a TV there, but I can work on my defensive shooting.

Good point on being careful. I've been advised not to go shooting alone. There are others shooting in groups who might be tempted to take advantage of a lone person as he's packing up.

My retired FBI instructor and I usually bring an AR and a 12-gauge pump with slugs whenever we practice handgun shooting.

Ton of prevention is worth an ounce of cure.

I go shooting and camping alone in the desert a lot. For 20+ years.

I just follow these rules and I am good to go:

I don't shoot in commonly used areas.

I shoot in areas where I can see anyone coming or going for a long distance.

I am aware of what's around me and I wear electronic hearing protection to hear things coming. When I didn't have electronic ear protection I took the ears off when I was done shooting for the same reason.

I don't go change targets without my rifle slung on my back. I lock up my other guns when I do so. Especially when shooting long distance, when possible drive the vehicle down to change the targets.

I also carry a concealed weapon, usually in 357 magnum. 44 special, or 10mm flavor.

Worked for me for years.

Here I am, this past weekend, camping alone. On the back side, the unpopulated side of a desert lake at a camp site overlooking the lake and a wash, with one way in and one way out that I can see up for 500 yards... and my rifle is always with me.

I have never had a problem following those rules.

Do you cook up the jacks? If so what's the taste like?

Unless you know what you are doing I don't recommend it. Jacks out here have parasites and some even carry fleas with plague. Especially in warm months which is 8 months out of the year. There are many precautions. Such as wearing gloves, burning fur, boiling, checking liver color etc..... not worth it. Plus unless they are young, they are gamy, stringy, and not very good eating.

Winter time they provide good fur.... but prices aren't good $2.50-4.50 a pelt

I will eat cottontails though.
