I am mounting a shotgun on my ATV with the barrel facing up for various reasons. The main reason is me not wanting to "rake" anyone I drive by like it would when mounted in the horizontal position. Mounted vertical, I am concerned about debris falling in the barrel. I remember seeing covers that go on the ends of long guns that are simply blown out with the first shot. Is there something special about these covers or would a child's balloon accomplish the same results? My concern is chamber pressure and marking the finish on a parkerized gun.

Balloons or condoms will work fine used as muzzle covers and should not cause any problems as long as they are not inside the barrel.

Condoms are the easiest way to go. They kept the ice, snow & mud out of the barrel of my carbine in Korea and you didn't have to worry about about removing them to fire the gun. Often you could reuse them, as the gas would blow them off before the bullet reached them. What you reused them for was up to you.

Black balloons from the Dollar Store are what I've used.
