Need help as I'm new to the gun world. I have been around them and put a bunch of rounds through my shotgun and fired pistols before but never owned one. I decided it was time to buy one and the sigma .40 was on sale. Meet up with 2 friends that know guns inside and out but wanted to find out from other users of the same gun. Loaded up and could not even hit the 10 ring target from 10 yds after a dozen rounds. The next rounds caught the lower right edge of the target (not the ring). Friends tried it abd they hit high right but we did start to get a few on the edge of the black. I was told it need breaking in which after reading post here abd talking to friends I understand but the gun is way off, is this normal out of the box? Do they an adjustable sight for this gun? Can it be dry fired with no cap? Please help!!

Dennis most likely this is not a gun issue but a trigger control issue. Do some dry firing practice. The one thing I recommend is not to try and snatch the trigger. Slowly and smoothly squeeze the trigger until it breaks. Then rack the slide and continue this a couple hundred times. It will do wonders not only for this gun bet any others you will shoot. Trigger control is important no matter what gun you shoot.

There are a lot of variables and the Sigma is one gun that if you have suspect trigger control it will be evident. Practice, practice and practice some more. Be Safe.

Thank you so I can dry fire this gun without doing any damage to it? Also I had my friends fire it with almost the same results and they can shoot as they both took 9mm and .44 mag and shot dead on and they gave me the same advice as you.
Thank You

I bought a 9VE brand new, I have ammo boxes full of reload 9mm so I shot it often right up until I sold it (didn't need another 9mm it turned out). The trigger takes getting used to and you'll eventually get a feel for the 40VE. I bought a used 40VE for $201 out the door. "Used" means the trigger is pretty decent as compared to the new 9VE. The first Sigma I bought (still have) is a used 9F. The trigger on the F (original) is vastly superior to the VE series. Butt ugly gun compared to the VE Sigmas, but groups much better because the trigger doesn't require nearly the energy required for the new generation Sigmas. That said, the VE series is the best deal in a hand gun I've encountered in 40 years of shooting. I love the 40VE (and the 9VE) and can hit the notebook paper all day @21,30 and 40 feet. Keep shooting, I'm not into dry firing, but it can't hurt and it's cheaper than live fire. Soon you'll love that 40VE, I'll bet you.

Yes you can dry fire without fear. Smith and Wesson recommends it themselves in the manual. Stick with it. Let us know how it turns out over the next couple months.

Conn Ark - you are right the 9f is butt ugly
compared to the new 9ve. Like you i own the 9f
but can not see myself buying another sigma as the 9f meets all my needs for 9mm. At 25 feet
I can shoot the 9f almost as well as my four 22's.

As maligned as the original F series is, the 9F is a great pistol. It has none of the frame fracture issues of the 40F. The main difference between the F and VE series is the better trigger group in the F series, the longer barrel on the F series, the larger port for spent rounds on the VE series and overall styling of the VE series. I tried every type of ammo and intentionally didn't clean the 9F and it never failed on my 30 day return it without question deal of $150. My 9F has countless rounds through it, has a few scratches on it when I bought it, who knows how many rounds went through it before I bought it, it keeps on ticking and easily out-shot my 9VE and out-shoots my current 40VE for accuracy.

I have a 9VE and love it. Over 1000 rounds and countless dry fire the trigger is not really bad. It is long and hard but not much chance for a "Plaxico discharge". It will never be a match pistol but for every day carry it's perfect. I found "pulling" as opposed to "squeeeezzzzing" the trigger improve my accuracy a lot. Try a touch of Miltec grease around the sear to smooth out the trigger.

Send that Sigma back to S&W and get a free trigger job done on it.

See the Free Trigger Fix Thread for more details.

My 40ve goes everywhere with me (dont leave home without it)after a butt load of blammo through it it was,as sigma 9&40 said, ME!!! i hold the weapon with my right hand tight enough to squeeze the trigger and actually wrap my left hand around my right hand and squeeze/hold the gun there it gives me more trigger control. if mister bad guy is inside 60 feet i'm gonna let the air out of him!come to think of it, if he's that far away maybe i should just runaway
