We have been considering one of these for a while - seems like everyone has one these days. It would be mostly for a cup after dinner, at night etc as we go through a full pot every morning with our regular brewer (Mr. coffee). Wife often likes flavored where I like straight, so single serve seems like a good solution.

Costco has a Keurig model online and in their store for around $150 - seems like a good deal, but when you read comments, they seem to break down a lot:

Costco - Keurig® Platinum B70 Gourmet Single Cup Coffee & Tea Brewing System

There is also a Cuisinart model that is maybe a little better for a little more money:

Costco - Cuisinart® Single Serve Brewing System

I know that there are a lot of coffee experts here so I was wondering which machine they use or would recommend. I think we would like to keep it under $200 or so - seems like a lot for a cup of coffee, but if the machine lasts, it might be worth it.

Any suggestions or recommendations/comments appreciated!

The machine works well, but the cost of the coffee is excessive IMO. If you drink more than one cup of coffee at a time, it gets expensive. The cost of a full pot of coffee is about the cost of one of the cups.

For that same 150 bucks you could buy 2 Mr. Coffees @ 19.95 ea. And then get 55 bucks worth of your coffee and 55 bucks worth of your wifes coffee. All for the price of the one cup coffee maker.

I know that it doesn't make sense money-wise or common-sense wise either, but when SWMBO wants one and she says "what about this months new gun - you don't need that either" ....

We have a Mr. Coffee and two extra carafes. (One for me and one for her.) This and the microwave meets our needs.

(As you probably could guess, we're not coffee snobs. ;):D)

I was going to suggest a simple 1-cup drip coffeemaker for several reasons...but then I saw your follow up message. Good thinking/decision young man. :)

FWIW, regardless, I use a Melitta one cup "drip" and Starbucks' or similar premium coffee. I love it...and takes up very little counter space. That is one of the major drawbacks of the machines...they are big. The other is the price of the pods. Shocking.

Be safe.

We have one and like it very much. On my days off, I make a pot of coffee but on work days, usually use the Keurig for one cup for each of us while getting ready for work. My wife just started drinking coffee and likes a milder blend than I usually drink. The Kuerig is nice because she can make what she likes and there is no wasted coffee. If you get one, make sure it is one that has a more than one setting for cup size. It is all personal choice. Good luck, alot of choices - Joe

OK then. Well look at the hotel and restaurant supply houses, you can get those 1 cup hotel coffee makers for about 10 bucks ea. Buy a few and when one bites the dust toss it and get out another. Some use regular size paper filters, or get one with a permanent screen filter. Good Luck keeping the Missus happy, I know what you mean about that.

I also have one. I have an older model with just one cup setting the 10 oz. some have an 8 oz and a 10 oz settings. I found mine at Sears for about 100-- and they go on sale once and a while there. Our local bottled water company also sells machines and the coffee at significantly lower prices.
My wife calls me cheap because I run my coffee through the machine twice because the first run is quite strong. Keurig also sells a small basket filter that you replace the installed one with and you can fill with your own brew of coffee loose or with tea and brew just one cup of what ever brand you prefer. I use it on weekends when I have the time to clean it well. During the week I'm on the run so I just fill my 20 oz travel cup and go. I'm the only coffee drinker at home so it's a waste to brew a whole pot just for a cup or two. Shop around for the coffee and you will find it for sale in some unusual places and sometimes for some really low prices as the store is trying to get rid of them.

They got a Keurig at my last work-place, and I thought it was horrible. Thought the flavors were terrible, coffee was overpriced. When you hit the button once it gave you a very small amount of coffee, if you hit it again on the same cup you at least got a full cup, but it was so watered down it wasn't worth it. It left a bad taste in my mouth literally and figuratively. I have a cheap $20 coffee maker, fill the water to 6 cups, add two scoops of coffee, and get two cups on coffee in the morning--one at home and one for the road.

We bought ourselves a Cuisinart single serve unit for Christmas. We only paid about $89.00. IIRC it is a model 2000. So far it's been great and makes wonderful tasting coffee. My only gripe is when you open the lid after coffee has been brewed there's a lot of condensation that runs down. Solved by partially opening the lid and wiping with a paper towel.

Don't listen to these cheap people, I LOVE MINE! I use the My K-Cup and refill it with bagged coffee and I will give it up when you pry it from my cold dead hands! ;)

The wife and I have a Kurig.

We love it. We drink different "tastes" in coffee.
The machine works great. You can get a plastic unit with filter, so you can use your own store bought loose coffee in the Kurig if you want...

ANYTIME you WANT you can have a cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds...

We have had two. They both broke. They don't seem to hold up to a lot of use. I have been tempted to try the Cuisinart next.

Keurig's makes great coffee, I did have to return the first one, but the replacement has been flawless for over a year now. They offer a small filter basket as an accessory so that you can use any coffee you choose, or if the cost of the k cups is a turn off.

I just use single serve Folgers's packaged like hot tea. Purists may blanch, but it's hot, black, and bitter. It's good enough for a peasant like me jonesing for a quick cup of get up and go.

Good grief Juan Valdez if it's jut for a a after dinner cup get a French Press for a few bucks. Makes the best coffee and you can use any coffee you buy. Most are dishwasher safe.

The brands are endless. Here is just Target:

French Press : Coffee, Tea + Espresso : Kitchen Appliances : Kitchen + Dining : Target

BB&B

French Press Coffee Makers, Coffee Makers, Kitchen Electrics - Bed Bath & Beyond

You know I tried one, and I didn't care much for the coffee it made. I should find it and try it again. I have been wanting stronger coffee lately...
