Single Serve Coffee Machines - Keurig?

You know I tried one, and I didn't care much for the coffee it made. I should find it and try it again. I have been wanting stronger coffee lately...

You really need to experiment with a French press for the perfect cup of coffee. The brand of bean, the amount of beans, the correct grind, and steeping time are all factors. I use a Starbucks press that was given to me, and I buy San Francisco Bay French Roast beans from Costco. I'm not a coffee snob, I'll drink Boyd's in a restaurant, but at home, I drink really good coffee. I always use exactly the same amount of beans, grind them for exactly the same amount of time, and let it sit before pressing the same every time. Consistancy means good coffee every time!

I have had a couple of Keurigs, currently my second of the platinum B70 models. Had one fail after abouta year and it was cheerfully replaced. The other one is going strong after more than a year. I really like the coffee from these machines. The cups are expensive, but I'm worth it. :D Sams and Costco have the cups at a cheaper price. Folgers has recently started making K cups, available at Costco for just under $30/80.

My wife has a Keurig machine. I got her the filter for it she can use what ever coffee she wants in it. Fast and quick and a whole pot of coffee dose not go to waste.

Ah I tend to get whats on sale. I like the New England Coffee brand and they have it buy one get one free at Price Chopper sometimes. The eye opener blend is good.

If SWMBO wants a new coffee maker you know what you must do. Offer to drive her to wherever she wants to go, pay for the thing, carry it into the house and set it up for her while smiling all the time. Life's good.

P.s the Krupp's machine does make good coffee, and it's faster than the standard drip pot.

I bought the top of the line Keurig model (don't remember the model name/number) and I don't care for it. It has the removable/refillable tank, so that it can make multiple cups without refilling the water.

I have tried all sorts of the K-cups, and I haven't found one I like as well as Maxwell House. If that makes me a low-class, redneck, plebian coffee drinker, so be it! :)

If I had liked the coffee, that would be one thing, but I discovered two irritants:

1) It would not make a full cup of coffee. I simply ran the machine again, to get a full cup, but now it was weak.

2) The multiple cup models have an internal tank...which cannot be drained. I found this out when I decided to put the dang thing under the cabinet, and wanted to drain it...consulting the owner's manual told me you can't. So, now I wonder what is growing in there. The manual does recommend running several cups of plain water through the unit after a period of inactivity before brewing any coffee...but I'm not sure that would clean out the mold, bacteria, scum, frogs, and other flotsam and jetsam.

SO, I am going to sell it at our next garage sale. I am going to get one of the single serve models for the wife, because she does like the hot chocolate K-cups. It doesn't have an internal tank, either...you just pour the cup of water in, and it all comes back out. No residual water left in the unit.

Back to our good old regular coffee maker loaded with Maxwell House for me!

Bed Bath and Beyond is probably the best place to buy a Keurig. Sign up for their email coupons and about once a month they run a 20% off a single item coupon. Use it to purchase the Keurig.

My wife and I love ours. Not as cheap as Folgers but way cheaper then a cup of starbucks.

That is how we got ours. Got to love those 20% coupons!

You can have the best coffee in the world but if you use crummy water, then it will be, well, crummy:D

Use filtered, RO, spring whatever. Tap water with chlorine is gonna taste nasty.

Thanks for all the great input - I know that a lot of folks here are serious about their coffee! It seems like there are pros and cons - I like the idea of using our own coffee (usually Folgers or Maxwell House) but also like being able to try something different on occasion - I think 60 or 80 K-cups would last us a long time.

The Costco Keurig deal is pretty good in that you get the filter basket (for your own coffee) plus a supply of K-cups and the fancier brewer, so that's probably what we'll pick up next time we are in the store. I'm concerned about reliability, but there is a warranty and if it lasts a few years, I guess that's all we can expect these days. Our regular coffee maker is just a $20 Mr. Coffee from K-Mart and it's been rolling along for 3-4 years now and it makes good coffee IMO.

Oh - I appreciate being called "young fellow" by one poster - at 63 I seldom hear that anymore :D

We have a whole house filter so that isn't a problem here. Tastes fine to me, no real difference to the RO filter we used to use for fish tanks.

I just got the keurig and its awesome i drink 4 to 6 cups of coffee a day now. Before i retired in 02 my job had free coffee it was one of the perks we can have coffee anytime. Since i retired i can't make coffee worth a dam. And the dunkin Donuts coffee down right sucks it tastes like it a week old or just rebrewed over and over. My hair could grow hair. With my Keurig i get the brew i want when i want and its dam good too. We love it. I got a new lease on life finally i got my coffee again. The hot chocolate is awesome too. We only pass this way once and a good cup of coffee adds a new meaning to our lives. Bill

BTW; try www.kenozacoffee.com for your K-cups for the keurig. This site has all different K-Cup manufacturers and any blend you want. In the past month i purchased $400 worth of coffee from them. I purchased the keurig's for my kids too and i give them coffee/hot chocolate too. You can get the screen cup or the filter for the keurig and blend/brew your own coffee too.

I just ordered some coffee to try from, www.discountcoffee.com they offer the K-cups in three different blends but i haven't tried it yet. There Grove Square coffee in the K-cups seems way cheaper so far but will it taste good. I will post if its any good or not.

Dunkin Donuts coffee sucks and there egg sandwiches does too.

There are a bunch of different flavors I want to try but one of my favorites is the Coconut by Green Mountain.

My friend has one, what I like is the vast selection of different coffee flavors you can add with each different cup selection. The downside for me is in the mornings I drink a whole pot (my mr coffee shows a line marked 10, cant imagine that is 10 true cups by measure standards.) and I would have to make 3-4 single service coffees from one of the machines your looking at.

Single serve

Hi Loutent,
I have been playing with single serve for a couple of months.
I needed to find a way to have decent coffee and not be burdened with a pot for an upcoming kayak trip.
I have been filling a insulated mug with boiling well water and dropping one of the single serve "Pods" in it. I sink it with a metal spoon and let it steep for several minutes. I'll wring out the pod and have been happy with the results.
I would guess the mug to hold a little over a pint.
I can only imagine this method would make a regular size cup that would make you run circles but you could vary the steep time to suit your cup size.
Best of luck to you.
Mike

Here is some information that might interest some viewers of this thread. I went to Walmart today to look at their single serve coffee machine selection. They had a B30 model Keurig, but what I found interesting, was that they also had a single serve machine labeled Mr. Coffee. Strangely enough, it also had the Keurig name on it. It costs $10 less than the solely Keurig labeled machine.

I know that there is a big following for Mr. Coffee stuff.

Single cup coffee machine?

Why?
We buy Instant Coffee
Put sweetner in the cup
Add the desired amount of coffee
Add water
Press the "beverage" setting on the microwave
Stir the coffee when it comes out
